I don't want to sound stupid because the answer might be obvious but what does that eye mean. I mean I've seen it before in Egyptian hieroglyphics but it seems to have an alternate meaning.

That is why i think Serj chose the eye of RA. Not for protection, but because it encompasses him as whole and human by exercising these senses. Serj does not believe in external locus of control, so it would not be for protection or luck.
