Sure sounds like it. Use Photoshops preferences and reset all of your tools. I only use standard factory settings for them. You may have reversed the White-Black functions of masks which can be reset in preferences (Black protects...White selects!)

i use photoshop elements, and there is no mask tool. so instead of creating my own by using an adjustment layer, i just used the selection brush tool on the "makeup" layer to select the areas i wanted affected, selected the inverse, and pressed delete. i was left with makeup only on the areas i wanted it. much simpler. less room for mistakes, though.
