What kind of wood is this made from?
Hard or soft wood?

Its made from poplar. Its seems to be the best choice for 2 reasons, poplar is a middle of the road wood so its fairly easy to carve, sand and shape. Secondly its middle of the road density gives it a nice float/sink characteristics.
