How Evolution REALLY Works, Part I

How Evolution Works the GAME. A must see!!!
KevinPluck has turned this simulation into an interactive game. You are the predator and the squares evolve to avoid you eating them.

The world is full of misinformation.
Interesting how most of the Young Earth Creationists and people pushing Intelligent Design, clearly don't have an education in the biological sciences. Evolution is the product of Natural Selection AND Mutation. Either alone does nothing.
Evolution is the logical outcome of the world around us. Organisms that store their genetic information in DNA are guaranteed to have mutations. Mutations produce NEW variation. Reproducing organisms are guaranteed to compete for resources. Competition between variable organisms leads to natural selection, i.e. those organisms that possess variation that gives then an advantage will out compete those who don't. Organisms with deleterious variation will lose to all other organisms. In this way the ENVIRONMENT SELECTS the best organisms. This has the effect of passing beneficial mutations on to the next generation and removing deleterious ones. Over time natural selection will lead to a net shift in the genome of the population, i.e. evolution.
Yes, this really is evolution. Changes in allele frequency, changes in gene expression, and changes in transcription factor binding efficiency, they are all evolution.
Logic predicts evolution, and observation confirms it. Evolution has been observed in the lab and in nature. Speciation (macroevolution) has been observed in the lab and in nature. Large changes in appearance have been observed in the lab and in nature. Beneficial mutations have been observed in the lab and in nature.
CORRECTION: Some have noted that Evolution need not include Natural Selection, as genetic drift does result in evolution. I agree that genetic drift is evolution, and should stress that Natural Selection is just one mechanism for evolution.
Natural Selection + Random Mutation = Evolution
Genetic Drift + Random Mutation = Evolution
Both are true.
To see an example of how genetic drift can lead to a speciation event, i.e. macroevolution, check out an old video of mine

To deny evolution is to deny direct observation. It is as silly as denying that the sky is blue.

And sorry, despite what the kent hovinds may have told you, ring species have not been "abandoned as invalid"
Lets go back to my example of a domestic cat vs wild cat. They are different species (they cannot produce fertile offspring of both sexes). DNA has proven that domestic cats evolved from african wild cats. You cannot argue against MtDNA. What excuses that?
define information in this context.
Oh, you can walk a mile, you just can't fly. "A" can't mate with "D" is variation spread within a kind, not going from fish to man. It's a giant leap in logic.
I read about the abandonment of various ring species validity at journals-royalsociety-org a few years ago, mate, not Hovind. I'm not even familiar with Hovind's ideas.
What natural forces are there that stop micro evolution from happening over and over again to create big changes? When one species transforms into another species that is macro evolution. if those small changes keep taking place, the end result will change away from the original
BTW, one of your favorited videos is of kent hovind 0_o
That is not really a valid comparison. All evolution is, is the process of many small steps turning into long distances.. like taking single steps to walk across America.. to say that evolution happens on a small scale, but theres some sort of limit, is just blissful delusion. The fact that the domestic cat has a common ancestor with the panther is not justified by the definition of microevolution.
"What natural forces are there that stop micro evolution from happening over and over again to create big changes?" Nothing. Variation within a kind can be great. But new more complex, functional, genetic information isn't introduced for unexplainable reasons.
I haven't got a chance to read it yet (i have over 100 books in line waiting for my eyes) but I heard it covers exactly what your questioning.
Correct, it is introduced by very well explained reasons. gene material increase followed by a vast assortment of mutations, with all detrimental variants failing to reproduce which copies all nonfailing variants into successive generations allowing more variation. differential reproduction explains how a benefitial mutation spreads faster than neutral ones.
It's speculation only insomuch as we don't have information of the current and hence environmental conditions. The higher rez our information the closer your prediction will be accurate. GIGO.
Firstly, all animal cells are very similar. The genes to produce membranes, bone, blood cells et cetera are virtually identical even in species which look very different.
The minor variations in protein chemistry between species are easily produced by mutation, (you can see this demonstrated in the scientific literature).
The second requirement is to change the gross morphology.
Bonier fins= reach better food at shoreline.
Longer fins= push head out of water to reach food on land.
Larger, more intricate gills= stay out of water longer.
These three things are the beginning of transition to land.
Fins will get longer until ...
So the animal has got as far as a lizard or amphibian.
better suited to land = out-compete other proto-lizards. (fattier skin, more mucous to keep eyes wet, tail shaped for balance instead of swimming etc)
Proto lizard fills available land area. Geographic separation into different environments begins and groups adapt to niches.
Phalanges which are more separate and articulate = access to new foods using dexterity.
Scales made of keratin form strands instead of plates (hair) = better for cold places.
Accelerated metabolism = longer hours of activity.
Eggs which "hatch" inside parent instead of outside = more young survive.
Very bendy fingers = climb trees to escape danger.
Bendier tail = don't fall so much
Obviously each step is an over-simplification, and could be broken down into a million smaller steps, but that's about the size of it.
