How Evolution Works the GAME. A must see!!!
KevinPluck has turned this simulation into an interactive game. You are the predator and the squares evolve to avoid you eating them.

The world is full of misinformation.
Interesting how most of the Young Earth Creationists and people pushing Intelligent Design, clearly don't have an education in the biological sciences. Evolution is the product of Natural Selection AND Mutation. Either alone does nothing.
Evolution is the logical outcome of the world around us. Organisms that store their genetic information in DNA are guaranteed to have mutations. Mutations produce NEW variation. Reproducing organisms are guaranteed to compete for resources. Competition between variable organisms leads to natural selection, i.e. those organisms that possess variation that gives then an advantage will out compete those who don't. Organisms with deleterious variation will lose to all other organisms. In this way the ENVIRONMENT SELECTS the best organisms. This has the effect of passing beneficial mutations on to the next generation and removing deleterious ones. Over time natural selection will lead to a net shift in the genome of the population, i.e. evolution.
Yes, this really is evolution. Changes in allele frequency, changes in gene expression, and changes in transcription factor binding efficiency, they are all evolution.
Logic predicts evolution, and observation confirms it. Evolution has been observed in the lab and in nature. Speciation (macroevolution) has been observed in the lab and in nature. Large changes in appearance have been observed in the lab and in nature. Beneficial mutations have been observed in the lab and in nature.
CORRECTION: Some have noted that Evolution need not include Natural Selection, as genetic drift does result in evolution. I agree that genetic drift is evolution, and should stress that Natural Selection is just one mechanism for evolution.
Natural Selection + Random Mutation = Evolution
Genetic Drift + Random Mutation = Evolution
Both are true.
To see an example of how genetic drift can lead to a speciation event, i.e. macroevolution, check out an old video of mine

To deny evolution is to deny direct observation. It is as silly as denying that the sky is blue.

Ring species ... ( 1 week ago by EnonimusTransmission)
Ring species present the same problem of "macro vs micro evolution" -- or more appropriately: evolution vs variation. Ring species (which, btw, most examples have been abandoned as invalid) show evidence for a common ancestor which has degenerated into varied subspecies through depredation, but it does not provide any empirical evidence that any new genetic information has been added to create the difference. Still no observable evidence a fish could become a man.
The defining ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
The defining difference of macro vs micro is speciation. Ring species are not all just subspecies. A can mate with B.. B can mate with C.. C can mate with D... but D cannot mate with A which by definition makes A and D different species. Your logic is that "sure, you can walk a block, but theres no possible way you can walk a mile because it doesn't happen all at once"
And sorry, despite what the kent hovinds may have told you, ring species have not been "abandoned as invalid"
It absolutely ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
It absolutely amazes me that you creationists can deny SOOOO MUCH EVIDENCE yet if someone criticizes any single absurd aspect of your beliefs, you will go to the ends of the earth twisting facts to try and assure yourself that you are right.
Lets go back to my example of a domestic cat vs wild cat. They are different species (they cannot produce fertile offspring of both sexes). DNA has proven that domestic cats evolved from african wild cats. You cannot argue against MtDNA. What excuses that?
If you don't ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
If you don't understand what MtDNA is, then i would highly suggest doing some research on it. Then if your willing to actually look at the facts instead of creationist propaganda, goto science journal's website (do a google search - they are one of the world's most prestigious scientific journals) and register a free account. then lookup Issue Jan 6, 2006 #5757 pp73-77. this is the research done on cats to trace their lineage via MtDNA, which is irrefutable.

"sure, you can walk a block, but theres no possible way you can walk a mile because it doesn't happen all at once"
Oh, you can walk a mile, you just can't fly. "A" can't mate with "D" is variation spread within a kind, not going from fish to man. It's a giant leap in logic.
I read about the abandonment of various ring species validity at journals-royalsociety-org a few years ago, mate, not Hovind. I'm not even familiar with Hovind's ideas.
Then how do you ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
Then how do you personally define macro evolution (not that it matters, because what i have explained is what actual macro is - "Macroevolutionary studies focus on change that occurs at or above the level of species")?
What natural forces are there that stop micro evolution from happening over and over again to create big changes? When one species transforms into another species that is macro evolution. if those small changes keep taking place, the end result will change away from the original
Can you send me the ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
Can you send me the link to the article on ring species?

"Oh, you can walk a mile, you just can't fly"
That is not really a valid comparison. All evolution is, is the process of many small steps turning into long distances.. like taking single steps to walk across America.. to say that evolution happens on a small scale, but theres some sort of limit, is just blissful delusion. The fact that the domestic cat has a common ancestor with the panther is not justified by the definition of microevolution.
It seems to me that ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
It seems to me that the way you approach evolution is that "a fish gave birth to a human" and even a child can figure out that logic is flawed and way off-base from what evolution actually is. I might as well say that "theres no possible way that this 6 month old baby is human, because it cannot give birth to a full grown man"
Macro-evolution as ... ( 1 week ago by EnonimusTransmission)
Macro-evolution as it was originally distinguished from micro-evolution is the difference between upward vs. downward evolution, evolution vs devolution, loss of genetic information vs spontaneous new genetic information, etc.
"What natural forces are there that stop micro evolution from happening over and over again to create big changes?" Nothing. Variation within a kind can be great. But new more complex, functional, genetic information isn't introduced for unexplainable reasons.
"All evolution is, ... ( 1 week ago by EnonimusTransmission)
"All evolution is, is the process of many small steps turning into long distances." So it's speculation as to what might happen at long distances? The fact is we can get variation for many reasons, and the only reasons we can observe is by loss of genetic information. In this way the assumption of the opposite is not based on observation and contradicts what we do observe.
Nope, a fish can't ... ( 1 week ago by EnonimusTransmission)
Nope, a fish can't give birth to a human. But for a fish to eventually change into a human (over a long time) requires reconciliation of where all the "human parts" come from, doesn't it? A fish could become a fish with less fins by removing some fins, or sharper teeth, or any manner of variation with the genetic information it has -- but how would the necessary information to create a human ever get there? It's not logical.
By the way, I'm not ... ( 1 week ago by EnonimusTransmission)
By the way, I'm not getting any notifications of your responses for some reason, so I may miss something... if you want to have a real conversation feel free to send me a PM. You seem respectable.
You still haven't ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
You still haven't given a good explanation of what you think defines macro evolution. If you can justify all the examples of what we call macro evolution as micro evolution within a kind, then fine.. then every animal on this earth if of the same "kind". Without even going into the fossil proof, MtDNA is an irrefutable way to trace evolution back through its phylogenetic tree.. not to mention other DNA markers that are also unexplainable and clearly point to common ancestry
You might want to ... ( 1 week ago by scottklarr)
You might want to check out the book "Your inner fish" by Neil Shubin if you are wanting some more details about "how fish became humans" (which as im sure you know is a massive oversimplification disregarding the millions of years in between)
I haven't got a chance to read it yet (i have over 100 books in line waiting for my eyes) but I heard it covers exactly what your questioning.
"But new more ... ( 1 week ago by damianpoirier)
"But new more complex, functional, genetic information isn't introduced for unexplainable reasons."
Correct, it is introduced by very well explained reasons. gene material increase followed by a vast assortment of mutations, with all detrimental variants failing to reproduce which copies all nonfailing variants into successive generations allowing more variation. differential reproduction explains how a benefitial mutation spreads faster than neutral ones.
"So it's ... ( 1 week ago by damianpoirier)
"So it's speculation as to what might happen at long distances?"
It's speculation only insomuch as we don't have information of the current and hence environmental conditions. The higher rez our information the closer your prediction will be accurate. GIGO.
It is only ... ( 6 days ago by m3141592)
It is only illogical if you don't have the background information to process logically (ignorance).
Firstly, all animal cells are very similar. The genes to produce membranes, bone, blood cells et cetera are virtually identical even in species which look very different.
The minor variations in protein chemistry between species are easily produced by mutation, (you can see this demonstrated in the scientific literature).
The second requirement is to change the gross morphology.
Lets imagine how ... ( 6 days ago by m3141592)
Lets imagine how this might happen through the higher likelihood of more suitable organisms reproducing. At each stage I will specify a type of variation and a circumstance which could encourage it's continuation in later generations.
Bonier fins= reach better food at shoreline.
Longer fins= push head out of water to reach food on land.
Larger, more intricate gills= stay out of water longer.
These three things are the beginning of transition to land.
Fins will get longer until ...
... they are like ... ( 6 days ago by m3141592)
... they are like legs. A gill which is increased in size, "crinklier" inside to increase surface area, and stays wet with mucous is basically a rudimentary lung.
So the animal has got as far as a lizard or amphibian.
better suited to land = out-compete other proto-lizards. (fattier skin, more mucous to keep eyes wet, tail shaped for balance instead of swimming etc)
Proto lizard fills available land area. Geographic separation into different environments begins and groups adapt to niches.
Some groups get ... ( 6 days ago by m3141592)
Some groups get bigger to reach leaves, some get bigger forelegs to dig, some bigger back legs to chase.
Phalanges which are more separate and articulate = access to new foods using dexterity.
Scales made of keratin form strands instead of plates (hair) = better for cold places.
Accelerated metabolism = longer hours of activity.
Eggs which "hatch" inside parent instead of outside = more young survive.
Very bendy fingers = climb trees to escape danger.
Bendier tail = don't fall so much
We're basically at ... ( 6 days ago by m3141592)
We're basically at the level of a rudimentary monkey, so make it's brain bigger to out-smart the other monkeys, lose some hair to deal with climate change etc, and they're basically people.
Obviously each step is an over-simplification, and could be broken down into a million smaller steps, but that's about the size of it.
the dark knight ... ( 18 hours ago by verypoorchoiceofword)
the dark knight rocked!!! everyone remember that evolution is not here to damn God.. but here to try to further our intelligence of life that is on earth.. and how it does stuff. none of this proves that there is no God. so just listen to it like that and i think it wont be as big of a deal. wow i am drunk. oh and also look up Kent Hovind. waht? yah lol
