The electronic analog (pun intended) to a Ruben's Tube is an Oscilloscope. As they both show the waveform, or the density of molecules over distance. An equalizer shows the amplitude or density of a given frequency. Frequency is the count of the number of waves in a given second of time. You can easily see frequency of the pure tones at the start. Good luck on the music part, that is complex math, like a Fast Fourier Transform.

Props on the Dave Brubeck! An interesting observation is that when you played the pure tones in the beginning, the wavelength of the standing waves of fire corresponds to the speed of sound divided by the frequency. This could make an interesting experiment exploring the relationship between wavelength, phase velocity, and frequency.

sound isn't a light, so you can't really se sound in any way. but things like wifi, ir, bluetooth etc is a kind of light that can't be seen by a naked eye. try to have a camera in front of a remote control while pushing some buttons on it and see whats happening
