Martin Mull has a strange physical condition in reallife. It is much like a natural lobotomy. He admitted in a 1978 Newsweek article that he never yelled in reallife. My brother-in-law has a similar physical condition and when he was a kid my brother-in-law was taken to a neurologist!

I am pretty sure that it is not canned. Fernwood was filmed in front of a live audience if I am not mistaken.

puremagic1: The "presenters" (?), as you called them, were actually the "host," Martin Mull and his "sidekick," Fred Willard. The show, "Fernwood Tonight," was a total SPOOF! So everything Mull and Willard did was making fun of talk shows. And so what they did WAS funny.
mtemrich and mysterywhiteboy45: This was indeed done before a real, live audience. Absolutely NO canned laughter. That was part of the true beauty of this show.
I always watched "Fernwood Tonight," and always loved it!

Ok then that makes a little more sense. However i didnt pick up on the fact that it was a piss take. Which may reflect on my own sense of humor or the talent of the hosts.

I think more parties should have people coming over with something prepared to entertain their other friends. A trio, etc.By the way, Tom used to open for Martin and also Frank Zappa in the very early days. Wow.

I think it's meant to be more surreal than tragic. It certainly is vivid, like some of the famous boxing paintings by Geeoge Bellows. I think the crowd is used to being sent up by Martin and gets in a high keyed up state. As they say, the crowd is the untruth.

I hope you're updated by now as to what was really going on in this bit.
Believe it or not, Tom used to open for Martin's comedy act in the early seventies, and also opened for Frank Zappa. Martin Mull is also an astonishing Photo-realist painter with Henry Draeger leanings.

So, you must be a fan of the Freestone bakery. TOm is now through with his sensational 2008 tour..(I caughthim front row in Phoenix) and I'd love to leave something for him to find as a grand thank you. If you're up to the task, I'm looking for recruits. This will be a marvelous harmless non-annoying project done is complete secrecy. Concerning your not picking up on the satire immediately, I'm lucky enough to have a bunch of homemade tapes of Fernwood 2-Night (later called America 2-Night) and I can reassure you that it takes most people awhile to get into the "groove" of the show, for lack of a better term. If you watch three episodes in a row or so, your mind will be irreversibly warped and your facial muscles will be twisted into a permanent grin.

For those debating about how much of the show was scripted:, Fernwood 2-Night was written by some of US TV's most razor-sharp wits, including Harry Shearer (The Simpsons; Spinal Tap) but remember, the program ran FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK over the summer of 1977, adding up to a total of 65 shows in roughly three months! There is NO WAY that the guys weren't ad-libbing or just plain winging it some of the time! (One hint can be found in the way that most episodes abruptly cut off at the end.)

What you were watching were reruns, the show was originally aired once a week. The show was a spin-off from the same people who brought you "Second City TV" (Canadian). Fernwood was originally a segment from the Chicago group of 2nd city. Thats why you'll see so many familiar faces, like John Candy. Harry Shear is in one of the old shows as well, but I don't remember what he looked like then. The cuts are because there were no commercials in the originals, and they weren't made for them.
