The Russians did want to go but they were eventually beaten to the Moon by the Americans, by not too much, perhaps. From a pure scientific perspective, sending people to the Moon didn't make too much sense, it was just a race of who gets there first. I think this explains why we haven't returned ever since. And if it were a hoax, it couldn't possibly have been kept in secret and the Russians would have been the first to expose the US.

Sending people to the moon was strongly driven by 2 things: 1) It had never been done and 2) It was a race between superpowers. Can anyone confirm,that if your watch the apollo 11 "live footage", in the mission control room, you see the workers watching Aldrin and Armstrong, on a screen. There is said to be a small 51 on the screen, which of course, is the now famous, area 51!

Hi there, LunarTurner, and thanks. I think the main point of sending people to the moon in terms of scientific sense, apart from kicking the Russians' ass, was to prove that it can be done. Now that it has been proved, it would be pointless to go back just for the sake of going back. If we are ever to go back, that should be on a much larger scale, i.e. establishing a permanently staffed moon base for deep space research, not just for jumping up and down again for 12 hours and then coming back.

Istvan, well "jumping up and down again for 12 hours" is a little unkind to the geological efforts of Apollos 15-17. That was definitely serious science. But you're right. If they go back, it should be to establish an observatory, test mining theories and work toward establishing an outpost for possible Mars exploration. Otherwise, let's spend the cash on alternative fuel technologies or improved internet or better bar-b-ques or something.

What was meant to be said was "One small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind", meaning that one little step of a single human onto the moon can be a monumental acheivment for all of humanity. Instead, the famous quote sort of contradicts itself, saying one small step for man(mankind) is a giant leap for mankind, which is like saying watermelon is exactly like watermelon
