Officers Honored For Response To Mall Shooting

Video Description:
Four police officers who responded to a fatal shooting rampage at Ward Parkway Mall last year were honored for their valor on Tuesday.
"Going to the call, we just had a bad feeling. Then, when we got there, it all went downhill," Officer Bonita Cannon said.
April 29, 2007, was a day of panic. KMBC's Jim Flink reported that a lone gunman, David Logsdon, had already committed murder and came to the mall seeking more victims.
When police officers arrived, they found two people shot to death at random near their cars.
"These people were just in the mall to shop and boom, they were gone in a moment. And for what reason? For what justification?" Officer Ricky Ropka said.
Police said that the suspect, Logsdon, had begun his crime spree by killing a neighbor. He then shot and wounded an officer during a car stop. During a struggle, the officer managed to take two firearms away from Logsdon before he sped off.
"By taking those two guns away, that was huge. Officers Peyton and Griggs are the real heroes here," Ropka said.
The heroism came in the form of many officers, each performing different roles under chaos with calm, Flink reported.
"What you train for, granted it isn't the actual scenario you train for, but you can fall back on a lot of that training," Sgt. James Buck said.
"I think that everything that could have been done that day was done. I don't think anything could have been done differently," Sgt. Mike Glass said.
All four officers received certificates of commendation for their exceptional acts that kept casualties to a minimum.
