The Americans could have gone round Manila although but then again the Japanese should have surrendered the city like the Americans did in 1942. Instead the Japanese wanted to fight to the last man - and killing as many Filipinos as they could while they did it. It was like Iwo Jima in a city. Sad. One thing we'll never know. If the Americans had just gone round Manila and had not tried to take it, what would the Japanese have done in the city, knowing that their days were numbered? I can only guess that given their past behaviour, the results would have been more horrible atrocities.

The liberation of Manila resulted to the death of more than a hundred thousand Filipino civilians. Most were massacred by the Japanese while the others were blown away by the American artillery fire. After the fighting the city lays in total ruins.

let's not sugar coat history. the precious medieval european walled city of the east was destroyed because of world war 2. not wanting to pay for the reconstruction after the war, the americans gave us independence suddenly in 1946 which they were so hesitant to give us before. thank you americans! suddenly, filipinos were left on their own to rebuild themselves! great!

Two foreign powers made Manila their battle ground...gave no respect for the residents and their home...took turns in devastating the city of Manila...since then Manila was not able to recover from this...It was the second most devastated city after WWII...thanks to the US and the Japs but no thanks...
