I find it funny that you don't like Sonic 2 special zones in favor of Sonic 1. Personally I like Sonic 2 much better and Sonic 3 the best(the only one I could collect all emeralds and still have fun).

My opinions on Tails in Sonic games(gameplay wise):
Sonic 2: Annoying, and I didn't know you could kick him out of special stages >.>Sonic 3: VERY HELPFUL(especially with a competent friend at the 2nd controller). He can help you get to platforms you've missed, gather rings, and attack Eggman in bosses you can't seem to hit.
SA1: It was a nice feature to have Tails playable by 2P. All in all, fun by useless.

If you use Knuckles this game is so much easier the special stage totals are a lot lower and thus easier to attain, as well as that there's no Tails to lose your rings and you go just as fast as Sonic but can also climb, there's loads of extra lives up high.

Here we see a prototype version of Grounder here where he is Red instead of Turquoise color that he would have. The main difference here is that he doesn't have a mouth and he has a much bigger nose. Interesting. And I remembered that show from a videotape that had that episode where he was smart at one point and I just thought that episode was funny. LOL
