So who are sane people, socialists? A movement of people that think human nature can progressively evolve and think that people are naturaaly equal does not sound sane to me, but sounds like they are delusional about the structure of reality.

I'd prefer the definiton of conservatism by Richard Weaver. He states that a conservative is essentially a realist, who realizes that there is a reality indepedent of himself and is governed by laws that he cannot change by his will or impose upon this structure of reality an artificial, abstract order.

Mhirtes12, I respectfully disagree with your belief and Galbraith's quote that conservatism is a philosophy which promotes selfishness. Read the writings of conservatives, I suggest older ones, and you will see that they contain many statements opposing the idea that man is atomistic, moral island where he can do whatever he pleases. Galbraith's comment is appropriate for libertinism (not libertarianism) and objectivism.

I also disagree on your assertions that libertarians are "looney". I would not consider myself a libertarian, but I know that it is not a looney philosophy. A belief system that speaks of laws that govern human action and warns of the threat majoritarianism has on individual voices is not insane.

why do all liberals call free market evil and horrible and socialism as the right way? socialism is essencially communism and we all know what the problems with communism is right? if not go look at any world history book. my point is that any social system is not going to be flawless and absolutely perfect. free market does have is bad sides but you can be damn well sure that socialism has more that its fair share of its own faults

Google ''Andrew Sullivan Chomsky'' and klick on the first link (a link to Chomskys website). After you've read that you'll loose ALL your respect for Andrew Sullivan. He truly is a liar.
I certainly don't agree with Chomsky's opinions, but I certainly don't think it's honest lying about what other people think, while they have no oppurtunity in answering. That's what Sullivan did.

The argument you are making is called a "scarecrow" market. You state that your opposition has a position and then blast them for that.
Surely some liberals embrace socialism, but it isn't communism. And nevertheless, those are loaded terms.
As far as free markets go, I don't see anyone advocating we get rid of them. Free markets are essentially economic democracies. Of course, the government DOES have to set the framework to ensure they aren't economic anarchies.

We all know the guy is a bit of a hypocrite (a conservative who in the 90s supported many liberal causes, a man who preaches responsibility while engaging in dangerous sexual behaviour). Nice to see Sullivan have to bend himself into ideological pretzels to make the world make some sense for himself and his flawed notion...
Conservatism is dead wrong and has always been dead wrong and that's why America's heyday was from 1930-1970 when conservatism wasn't relevant and why everything is falling appart now. Conservatism means anti-intelectualism, irrationality and foreign policy based on those two principles. And, as everybody now knows, a fundamentally flawed economic philosophy.
