Victoria de los Angeles performs at BARCELONA OLYMPICS. 1992

Uploaded by: lochness11
Video Description:
Barcelona Olympics Closing Ceremony--the extinguishing of the Olympic Flame with world famous Spanish/Catalan soprano Victoria de los Angeles,in her 70th year, and Luis Claret cellist, performing 'El cant dels ocells', as the Flame dies.
A well deserved honour to both of them. The melancholy of the folk song, reflects accurately the sadness of the Closing of the Barcelona Games.
A most moving occasion. The voice, cello, silence from the audience, and the dying Flame.

I like this version than the other one you have where she sang the same song for a benefit. Was this song lipsyched for this occasion?
I can't get enough of this song although I don't know what the lyrics are (if you can post the lyrics, much better). Thanks for posting.

Below this comment is the text and translation of the version sung here by V. de los Angeles - which is an arrangement by the wonderful Catalunyan composer, Xavier Montsalvatge, who has writtent that the cello solo was inspired by his fellow Catalunyan, the great cellist Pablo (Pau) Casals:
Array ( 8 months ago by divaesq)
En veure despuntar
El major lluminar
En la nit més joiosa
Els ocellets cantant
A festejar-lo van
Amb sa veu melindrosa.
La garsa, griva i gaig
diuen: - Ara vé el maig!
Respon la cadernera:
- Tot arbre reverdeix,
tota planta floreix,
com si fos la primavera.

While seeing the great light breaking,
On that most joyous night,
The little birds, singing,
Go to celebrate it
With their melodious voices
The magpie, mistle thrush and jay
Say "Now comes May!"
Responds the goldfinch:
"Every tree grows green again,
Every plant blooms,
As if it were the spring."

Sorry I missed this bridge between the two verses:
Ocells veniu, veniu a festejar l'aurora
i la millor Senyora
Birds come, come to court the dawn
and the best Lady (prob. Virgin Mary)

ike74ph ----No it wasn't lypsynched. A live true performance.
This was played on solo cello at her funeral, as the congregation stood in respect for this wonderful Musical Lady of Spain.

Thanks for the clarification. We have seen many great singers lipsynch when singing in similar occasions for voice quality and audibility. But I like this recording better than the 1994 recording (your post on the fundraising) since her voice was better here.

She is my favorite singer of all. She was a great genius, making it all seem so natural and inevitable, yet other singers betray how much hard work it is to sing like that. Her sensitivity of phrasing, gracefulness of ornament, subtlety of coloration, and tremendous skill is unmatched. I saw her perform twice, thankfully, and met her.

On the three occasion I heard her in recital/concert in Scotland,I didn't have the courage to go backstage.I'm told she was charming and welcoming backstage.
This piece was played on a solo cello at her funeral, as the congregation stood in respect.
A musician to the tips of her toes.

For me she has been the better artist than Caballe! Why? because Caballe killed her voice with to heavy stuff - only able to sing the high notes after that in pianissimo - without attack! Only to say I am a Spinto what she wasnt! And La des los Angeles sung evry time good and intelligent never with to much ideas of beeing more dramatic! A REAL ARTIST and GREAT SOPRANO! Divine!

I second to that! I don't speak Spanish, but I guess that "Victoria de los Angeles" must mean something like Victory of the Angels. Is that correct please?

It certainly is! Her poor parents, who didn't have much money, asked their priest for permission, and he agreed. It wasn't a stage name, but in her career it describes sweet Victoria so exactly.

I've received a few comments re the (1995?) tour. One in particular---following a recital the Hall Manager went into her Dressing Room, and she was sobbing her heart out.She explained she had never in her whole career been showered by coloured paper streamers from the appreciative audience.
