Saw her do this at the Roundhouse in London -- I think the crowd were initially sceptical, but it really worked, a real heartbreaker.
On paper Patti Smith is easy to mock (a 'rock poet' resorting to cover versions) but in person she's wonderful. Madonna, PJ Harvey and many others owe her, at least, a tip of the hat.
