The Myth of the Liberal Media: The Propaganda Model of News

Uploaded by: ChallengingMedia
Video Description:
http://www.mediaed.org
Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky demolish one of the central tenets of our political culture, the idea of the "liberal media." Instead, utilizing a systematic model based on massive empirical research, they reveal the manner in which the news media are so subordinated to corporate and conservative interests that their function can only be described as that of "elite propaganda."

Olbermann Denounces '24' as Part of Pro-Bush 'Fearmongering' and 'Brainwashing'
Keith Olbermann is scared. Not by the threat of terrorism in the United States. But at the notion that "24" might be raising Americans' awareness of the threat.
Time Magazine Asks 'Is 24 a Conservative Show?'
Undoubtedly, Bauer will continue to give liberals and libertarians conniptions before his latest day is over. But if conservatives and neocons think 24 is working for them, they don't know Jack.

Newsweek Wonders if '24' is a 'Neocon Sex Fantasy'
One has to start wondering if the media are more afraid of "24" and any reference to terrorism than terrorism itself.
Newsweek's Devin Gordon wrote: "Depending on your perspective, '24' is either a neocon sex fantasy or the collective id of our nation unleashed." Much like other recent media carps and whines concerning this show, Gordon used his review as an opportunity to swipe at the current president.

The Propaganda ... ( 3 days ago by CrocodilusPontifex)
The Propaganda Model has been debunked time and again.
First off, it's self contradictory. It asserts that the main media outlets are run by profit-driven corporations. At the same time, it asserts that these corporations serve to promote political rather than financial interests.
The 2 are mutually exclusive. Serving as a mouthpiece for the government is very UNprofitable. Exposes on corporate and government misconduct draws in viewers, and thus, profits.
Secondly, Chomsky ... ( 3 days ago by CrocodilusPontifex)
Secondly, Chomsky asserts that there's "mountains of evidence" of an alleged right-wing slant in the media, yet doesn't specify a single piece of evidence.
If you want proof of the liberal media, atleast in the sphere of entertainment, visit the Maoist Internationalist Movement website. Their reviews of top American blockbusters are surprisingly positive.
Terminator, Aliens, Matrix, The Running Man, Bladerunner, etc, all boldly portray corporations and the government as villains.
Thirdly, the it ... ( 3 days ago by CrocodilusPontifex)
Thirdly, the it would be extremely difficult for political elites to manipulate since most major media outlets are corporations (e.g. privately owned by stock holders) McGraw Hill, Morris, Clear Channel, Viacom, Time Warner, etc. are owned by millions of shareholders. Since corporations are legally obligated to secure profits for their shareholders, there is no possible way that a tiny few of them could push a political agenda without dangerously risking their own and everyone elses profits.
Lastly, the ... ( 3 days ago by CrocodilusPontifex)
Lastly, the Propaganda Model ignores magazines, radio, and most importantly. The vast proliferation of the internet has made left-wing media and ideas widely available to the public, yet the people seem largely uninterested and relatively conservative/capitalist media and ideas remains popular despite the free leftwing alternative.
The Propaganda Model is simply a rehashing of Marx's tired old "False Consciousness" theory.

After Hillarys speech at the DNC I give you "the Cable News first reactions" -
Let's start with MSNBC: Grand Slam.
CNN first reaction: She hit it out of the park.
Fox News: Blah, blah, blah, generic endorsement of the candidate Obama not the character of Barack Obama.
I think the speech was a pile of democratic talking point cliches that had me cringing with disbelief that anybody could really thinks that there is a plan for supposed change. She said what she needed to say.

"Who are they to speak for any of us?"
First off, which media elitists claim to be speaking "for you"? Second of all, who are these media elitists speaking to "in your name"?
They don't speak FOR you, they speak TO you! That's what makes it MEDIA!

Obamas speech was a show. Not a real meat and potatoes speech on issues, but a movie style script that could have been read by any actor to sell a line of hollywood style emo drama to entice the less informed that feeling warm and fuzzy is the democratic message. I can't see him delivering anything but smoke and mirrors. Can you really say what he intends to do if elected? He doesn't have a clue. He hasn't even admitted the surge has worked. I hope America is brighter than this.

Tensions Boil Over ... ( 1 day ago by hellotommy)
Tensions Boil Over at MSNBC as Shuster, Scarborough Feud
The Democratic convention seems to have only exacerbated those tensions. Last night saw Olbermann caught on an open mic blurting out profane disgust at Scarborough, prompting the latter to verbally call him out while fellow MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews sat back mortified at the intra-family dispute.
Scarborough is discontented at MSNBC's decision to be the cable news of choice for Bush haters. That makes far left Olbermann freak.

You know how you turn in an essay, and think you did extremely well. But, then you come to find out your ideas were spread like peanut butter thus giving you a bad grade. Well I give these guys a bad grade. The Video was poorly done, and stated hardley anything relative to the main subject point. The question relevant to be asked is the majority of the media promote liberal bias. A: Well duh I'm a liberal and even i know that the media are biased. fucking noobs.

The majority of the media is very liberal. They should report the news and that is it. Leave out opinions as much as possible. Report the news. Keeping other programs for opinions on the news is fine.
How do you choose ... ( 14 hours ago by killerbandit)
How do you choose what to report?
I never see stories on the news about workers unless it is sensational like a major factory shutting down. But every single day there it is, the market report, like clock work.
In terms of what is covered, the media actually has a very prominent conservative bent. Would you disagree?
What is covered in ... ( 14 hours ago by killerbandit)
What is covered in the news these day has a decisive conservative bent. When is the last time you heard the daily status of the working class in the country? What about the financial report?
If you're as far to ... ( 7 hours ago by CrocodilusPontifex)
If you're as far to the left as Noam Chomsky and his followers are, of course the media will seem conservative.
Likewise, the media is intolerably liberal to Ku Klux Klan men and Skinheads.
But both these people make such a tiny and part of the population, their opinions are irrelevant.
I consider myself a centrist. I'm a social liberal and an economic/foreign policy conservative. I would say the media has a slight liberal bent. Entertainment media is far to the left (The Matrix, RATM, etc)
