billy joel is just the best singer there always and will always be in the world his got a great voice,his good with instruments(piano,acordian,guitar,the mouth thing,keybords)like omg and i have this dvd its amazing i cant beleive he tried to kill himself twice in the early 20's and that he was a alcholicits sad but maybe thats what brought him such a great song writer

I have a question as a foreigner. I know that most of the references in the song are NYC not NY State but what is the Hudson River Line? I've always imagined it is a railway that goes upstate along the Hudson but then again I have no real idea. Can someone inform all of us non New Yorkers?

BJ's voice is not great in the sense of tonal purity but what he has is a voice that reflects his emotions beautifully. His songs are mainly about his life experience (what I call "songs that mean something") and he sings them from the heart. The listener has no doubt what his feelings are on the song's subject. I liken him in some ways to Jim Webb.

True. His voice is one of the reasons why he is one of the most significant and enduring pop artists ever. Plus his piano playing and songwriting ability. Like Paul Simon, he has often explored unusual chord structures. This song is a good example.
