I never learned how to draw from a book. Quite frankly, I must say that you either have an ability or you don't. Books and teachers can only polish your abilities but they can't "teach you how to draw". As for the pork-and-beans method, sure it can help you draw correct proportions, but it's totally worthless in a major work. When creating a manga, you need to work quickly and neatly, and that method doesn't cut it (with all the erasing).

But in order to become a really good artist you need to fundimentals. Say your drawings are beutifull and detailed, but the arms are too long, or the hips are too narrow, or the shoulders are too big. The human brain is more likely to interpret something that is well prportioned in a more posative way that those that are not. Im just saying.... haha. Thats just what I go by, Making things more real but keeping the personality of the artist in tact.

Of course. When something is unbalanced in a picture, even if it is something as small as, let's say, the ear is a little higher than it should be, the whole picture will be completely ruined. As far as the fundimentals go, just by being observant and cognizent of your surroundings, one can achieve that quite easily.

Sure thats true for some people, but for more anylitical people like me, its best to see it written down in a book. Since artist have studdied the human form and proportions its nice to use their information. Besides when you do get the hang of proportions its easier to start a drawing out because its much more natural.Its all up to the individual right? lol.

Yeah, I guess. :) But how do you think the authors/artists of those books got their material? They had to observe their surroundings, just as I've mentioned. Whenever I'm drawing something "difficult" and I just seem like I can't get it right, I don't just put that drawing aside. I work at it until it's right. That's how you improve your drawing skills! ^_^

Of Course!:) And they worked so hard and from all that word they came up with somewhat of a manual for how to draw! Thats what we use not in Art classes lol. Its kind of like the cookie cutter aproch, yes but it works because it makes thing simpler and easier to understand. You know what I mean? :D But yes, its all about working hard and practicing, no matter what method you choose! Haha.
