It's Pachabel's canon in D. It begins on the tonic chord which in D major is D,F# and A, G doesn't even feature!! Listen to the string version here on you tube from nmrd123987 I think if you listen carefully to the bass line you'll find he's right.

Hope you didn't think I was replying to you obliv... I was replying to jow3st. Though I can't make an E fit the bass anywhere and you have only quoted 7 notes not 8 but hey.. jow3st seems to be playing it in G tho' even then it would have to be B instead of C# followed by D,A,D and E. I've just taken up the guitar too though I'm much much older than you and I bet I'm not nearly as good! Actually I suck big time!!!! My son is just a couple of years older than you and he plays the 'cello too:)
