This Video is, I think, hardly about the repopulationof the world by animals. The squirrels are a metaphor for the people who want to get beyond killing. Yes they way the last man... but that seems hardly what it is about, which to me seems clearly to oppose war.
Now Christianity or not, war is destructive and entirely based around negativity. As Smedly Butler said "War is a racket"!

This animated short was created in 1938, as a response to WWI and to fears about a second war, which immediately followed in 1939. Sure there are some problems with the story, but I still think this cartoon was one of the best ever created. It has a message for everybody, 70 years later. Just think, this dark vision predated the use of the atomic bomb by 7 years.

Where? I see lots of incenidary bombs, a couple of cannons, flak guns, fighter planes, rifles and machineguns. No atom bombs. I'd also like to say, if it only took them a short period of time after Man was destroyed to somewhat 'evolve' (houses, clothes, etc), how long until they et the smart idea to reverse engineer those old relics, for defence against predators? Once they forget the atrocities of the last war, what will hold them back? I want to see the follow-up, 200 years later.

The animated short foreshadowed the use of the atomic bomb. In the cartoon man annihilates man during WWI using guns, gas (hence the masks), etcetera. The atomic bomb wasn't created and/or used until 1945, 7 years after the cartoon was made. The director couldn't have known about the Bomb, but he still foresaw that it was possible for us to kill each other off. I've always thought this little film was just plain spooky, you know?

Okay, I wanted to also comment about your observations about the animals. You know, it does seem that the animals would eventually repeat the same mistakes...at least you would think so. That's one of the many things I find disturbing about it. This is a good thing, because this is one of those great animated films that make you think about things. My God this is perverse. Every one of those cheery little houses the animals live in at peaceful is made from a helmet from a dead soldier. Even lampposts are bayonet knives. Those squirrel kids who were so terrified of the bogeyman "man" would be traumatized if they knew their own cosy house was a relic of him.
It's just a jarring contrast.

Every time I see this it makes me cry. I especially think there should be a disclaimer on this cartoon to proceed with caution if you are experiencing severe PMS, as you are likely to cry your face off!!!!! It is, however, an excellent cartoon; cry or no cry! I am really glad that this cartoon is on YouTube for other folks to see.

The cartoon breaks my heart in particular, as Grandpa Squirrel reminds me of my late father-in-law, who was a WW2 vet. Even though he was my father-in-law, he wasn't much younger than my own grandparents, and he signed my last birthday card from him as "Grandma and Grandpa." Months later, my own grandparents died back-to-back, and a year later my father-in-law was dead as well.

The message in this cartoon is fucking shit. It's like the movie 'crash'. The underlying is so fucking obvious and ridiculous that there is no need discussing it.

I would surmise that this is intended as an antiwar film, made to try and encourage Americans to avoid getting involved in the conflicts that were brewing in Europe (this cartoon would have been made around the time that Hitler was making his annexations of Czechoslovakia and Austria).
