Socialism 2007:
Socialism for the 21st Century
A weekend of debate, discussion, and entertainment
June 14-17, 2007
Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare
Socialism 2007 is a three-day event that will bring together socialists and other activists who are involved in struggles across the country -- from opposing the war to organizing against the death penalty -- and share a vision of rebuilding the left.
Last summer, some 1,500 people turned out in New York City. This year¹s conference in Chicago will feature activists and socialists from Central and Latin America, renowned activist writers and journalists, soldiers and veterans who are resisting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, prisoners and their families who are fighting for justice in the prison system, immigrants rights activists who are organizing against deportations and many more.
Included in the more than 100 events at Socialism 2007 are films, music and meetings on hidden history of international working-class struggle -- from the Flint sit-down strikes of 1937 to the Russian revolution of 1917.

But the beauty of a ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
But the beauty of a capitalist republican system is that a person could have and still has the opportunity to pull themselves up by their own boot straps, work hard and bring themselves out of the lower class and into the middle or upper class. That the beauty of our system and it is that individual freedom in which I speak. Shame on you and your foolish worshipers of marxianity who wish to end this and forcibly confiscate property as you see fit. That tyranny! Shame on you!
Are you serious? So ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
Are you serious? So once the workers (the government)forcibly confiscates everyone's property and "distributes it equally" who decides who has a harder job? Is being a tax lawyer harder than being a criminal attorney? Is being a streetsweeper tougher than being a secretary. What aboout the same clerical position but with different bosses who giver different amounts of work? This is something only a market economy can address. This was tried in the 20th and it failed. Try reading a book.
do you know ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
do you know anything about physics? to "pull oneself up by one's own bootstraps" is as impossible in a capitalist economy as it is to move in space by pushing or pulling on yourself (you can only do so by pulling or pushing another body)
you obviously have a lot of prejudice against the working class if you think they deserve to live, slave, and die poor.
the working class ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
the working class decides, democratically. hey, it beats the dictatorship of corporations. socialism failed because it came under attack - read about the soviet intervention of 1918-1921 and compare that with foreign intervention in the french revolution.. "democracy failed" lol
capitalism is failing for millions of working class families. hard working people are freezing to death in detroit and london these beautiful capitalist democracies because their factories got moved overseas
Typical socialist. ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
Typical socialist. You are exagerating the awful plight of the working class who has never had it better than any other time in human history. And what is responsible for this increase? Thats right, capitalism. The "so-called" poor in this country have more luxuries, leisure time, and freedom than ever before.
I have contempt for people that think they are entitled money w/o earning it. And people rise out of the working class every day. You are clearly wrong, as is socialism.
Dictatorship of ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
Dictatorship of corporations. LOL! There you go again w/ your exagerating. If you don't like a corporation than choose not to buy their product. That choice doesn't exist when the governmen is the only one providing everything
And its not better, every time socialism has been established it has either directly resulted in or led to millions of murders. The danger is too much power in the hands of the government.
And if "worker's" jobs move over sea they should get another job.
you dont know shit ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
you dont know shit about the third world
i dont have to refute your exaggerations and lies because capitalism is murdering people every day
"they should get another job" - youre obviously just some rich kid
better than any ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
better than any time in history? again, you must be some isolated rich kid.. living conditions are going down the shithole, in EVERY country.. workers are competing for jobs and wages are plummeting
what do you mean "people who entitled money without earning it" the workers WORK for their money.. you are some stupid rich kid who got handed everything, what do you know about EARNING shit
LOL! You are a riot ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
LOL! You are a riot. I worked for everything I have. I have money because I and my wife earn it and therefore we should be entitled to keep it.
When it comes to living conditions you are dead wrong. In the US, the "workers" live better than at any other time in human history. As for the rest of the world, that is the problem of that particular country and really none of my business. So go sell your failed revolution to the third world and leave industrialized countries to the grown-ups.
LIES? So Stalin, ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
LIES? So Stalin, Lenin, Mao, Castro, et al. were not DIRECTLY reponsible for millions of murders? Are those lies? And I'm sure that you'll come back with some butterfly effect circular logic of how capitalism kills people but we both know its not the same thing at all.
And you assume that I'm just some "rich kid." Based on what? Because I went out in the world and succeeded and you and your ilk are just pissed that you didn't. Thats all socialism is, the economics of sour grapes. LOL!!!
eh you defeat ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
eh you defeat yourself
Nah, I just ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
Nah, I just defeated your bullshit argument. People pursuing the own individual interests is responsible for our progress. Show me one example concrete example to the contrary.

Hitler
(let me guess.. "HITLER WAS A SOCIALIST" lol.. shows how much you know about history, or socialism for that matter)
Wrong again. Big ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
Wrong again. Big government and the promise of socialism caused his rise to power. That combined the FACT that Nazis is an anachronism for National SOCIALIST German Workers Party and the Nazis were in total control of the means of production. But ignoring all that evidence, there was not any progress supplied by Hitlers totalitarian regime. You need to give me a concrete example of advances that a government has given us. Show me some state contributions (other than death and destruction).

i guess napoleon ... ( 4 months ago by soakchips)
i guess napoleon was a democrat too
You are making a ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
You are making a grave mistake by evaluating figures in history by modern day standards. At that time right wing was monarchy and left wing was a free capitalist democracy becuase (thankfully) Marxism hadn't been invented yet. So to answer you question, Napoleon was not a democrat by todays or any other standards.
And by using the word democrat in that regard are you trying to say that democrats are socialists?
And Hitler was a state socialist (the third category of socialism). Sorry.
Hitler was not a ... ( 4 months ago by Mockni)
Hitler was not a socialist and you're a moron.
Hitler was not a ... ( 4 months ago by Ploppy17)
Hitler was not a socialist, fascism and socialism are ideologies based on entirely different principles, and they are opposed on a fundamental level. Two examples are that socialists support egalitarianism and internationalism; fascists support social Darwinism and ultra-nationalism. Just using the name doesn't make them socialist -- George Bush once called himself compassionate. Doesn't make it true.
'And I'm sure that ... ( 4 months ago by Ploppy17)
'And I'm sure that you'll come back with some butterfly effect circular logic of how capitalism kills people'
It's not 'some butterfly effect' it is fact. Capitalism prevents vast numbers of people from getting the necessities of life, because it isn't profitable to do so. If it's a crime to shoot someone, [unless you're the US army] why isn't it considered just as criminal to allow them to starve to death unnecessarily? You're just as responsible for their death either way.
That is incredibly ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
That is incredibly untrue and their is no direct relationship between starvation and profit. The people that starve do so in regions either unfit for human life or prone to famine. You assume that it is the responsiblity of the haves to help the have nots and that is circular logic. Nobody put a gun to those people's head and made them live their, they were just born there and if so motivated could leave at any time. There choice to live in a dustbowl is not my responsibilty.
As you know ... ( 4 months ago by coolbreezed)
As you know socialism is an amorphous term used typically by leftists (and sometimes liberals and conservatives) to describe a system where the people are in charge of the means of production. Just because a type of socialism (National Socialism or Communism) didn't not work doesn't allow you to say that the people who practiced it were not "real" socialists. The FACT is, whenever large scaled big government collectivization has been attempted it has DIRECTLY resulted in millions of deaths.
Haha, Socialism has ... ( 4 months ago by chengloki)
Haha, Socialism has one thing in common with communism. As long as humans are involved, neither one can work. You can argue all you wan't. The truth is the truth. Wan't an example? You get as much as I do. Why should I work harder?? I have a great idea. But, who cares? I won't get anything for it. Socialism and communism, what a joke!!Neither one does a damned thing for humanity. That's what you should be thinking of. Not ideals. =Stefan=
