Yeah, John Entwistle is great--and so is Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Les Claypool, and many, many more. Pick? Fingers? Slap? Whatever. Just embrace the diversity, people, and thank God every day that this four stringed angel of an instrument actually exists! It's ALL good!

a "true bassist" should be able to approach the bass from all aspects, picking, fingering, and slapping. A good bassist is versatile with their style.

I usually use my fingers, but there are sounds you can't get without a pick. Try picking with the blade of your hand muting the strings far down near the bridge; that's the sound you want on some songs. Picks have their uses.

that's right. But there are bassists which only use picks. They also hang the bass too low. So they only scratch the sites with their pick. You ca't play anything, harder than metal, this way ;)

if your are a master of the bass like Enwistle,you are an expert at all types of bass playing.
For me, as a fellow bass player,I prefer finger over pick.

he is officially my idol, I was so proud when i learned the bass to my generation, but he is even more godly live, as all great musicians are. The thing which amazes me most though is how he can use his pinky so well and quickly, it kills mine to use it almost at all.
