He doesn't fit the qualities of a prodigous savant. Sure, he's incredibly gifted. If you have seen videos from Stephen Wiltshire, there is no comparison. Wiltshire can just look at a city for an hour and draw the entire landscape(15 feet long) in 3-7 days while this guy took years. Savants are simply extraodinary in calculations and music absorption. It's like having a camera in your brain and able to retrieve the images. The negativities are the simple skills they lack.

I saw the amazing film on Stephen Wiltshire also. But I don't see that there's a need to compare the two. They're both so different. Stephen's work is a feat of memory of a real place (Rome), while Gilles' is an artistic creation from the imaginary. The fact that he's spent so many years on Urville is an outstanding achievement of its own. Though it's a drawing, it's steeped in personal history. I wonder if to some degree, it feels like a real city to him.

no this is no savant, however it is interesting due to the fact a main characteristic and difficulty of having autism is being able to imagine, and express thoughts. here we see both at practice.

I don't know that you can completely rule him out, I have no formal education of course in Savant Syndrome, but I have read parts of many books devoted to this condition. He seems to fit the description to me.
If he is a prodigious Savant or not, his abilities amaze me.

I must be a savant if he's considered one. I'm not an expert but he might just be autistic. It's cool what he's able to do but I have something very similar going on and I'm no savant. I don't know.
