Yes, the belief now is that their similarity to the Mesonychids (ex: triangle teeth) stems from the fact that Mesonychids and Artiodactyls are sister groups. Mesonychids became specialized carnivores whereas most Artiodactyls became herbivores. Whales evolved from a very early Artiodactyl lineage when most members of the group were still generalized omnivores.
