these guys sound like heavy metal, why are they always referred to as being progressive rock? They don't sound anything like Marillion, Saga or Rush.

Dream theater is reffered to as progressive rock (metal more) because a lot of their songs contain "adapted" bars.. (e.g. beyond this life is mostly 3/4th bars) and they have ten minute long songs using nice scales and such.
However, they don't take it as far as for example meshuggah (33/22 bars.. as I can remember)so probably not the most obvious thing to hear.

thats true I saw DT in 2007 and Labrie was great.. much to my surprise, actually, after seeing videos of him from the early 2000s where he was flat during most of the songs

Don't judge them by one song. The album this song is on is very heavy and it's supposed to be that way. Listen to a Change of Seasons or Images and Words or Awake or Scenes From a Memory, you will some very progressive stuff, and also progressive rock (not as heavy as this). I personally don't like this album very much, I like the more proggy stuff. They most definately progressive rock/metal, and a seminal band, at that.

The reason Labrie sounds so dry all the time has a lot to do with his amplification and effects from this period, if you look at score, there is a bit more reveb and a hint of delay, and it sounds much much MUCH more appealing. It's like he doesn't have proper compression here and a tinge of reverb.

Yeah, this isn't my favourite album from DT, i love scenes from a memory and awake. also i think octavarium and six degrees of inner turbulance are worth mentioning.

Some lyrics of As I Am were inspired by Dream Theater's 2003 summer tour with Queensryche, described by Mike Portnoy as an "irksome series of shows." According to Portnoy, Queensryche guitarist Mike Stone tried giving John Petrucci tips on playing guitar, leading Petrucci to write the lyrics: "Don't, Tell me whats in tell me how to write"
