THE CORPORATION [11/23] Basic Training

Uploaded by: machbar
Video Description:
11. Marketing has transformed itself into a sophisticated, pervasive force that extends into
every part of our lives. Slick advertising campaigns are designed for the express purpose
of manipulating children into buying products and training them to become mindless consumers of goods they don't really want. The Nag factor, a marketing study that evaluated the effect of nagging, was designed to teach children how to nag more effectively. Consumers are made, not born.

The nagging thing ... ( 2 months ago by TheBadBandana)
The nagging thing hit home.
I was ready to take my young son to the pediatrician because his behavior got so weird but it turned out his little cronies were coaching him in the ways of making your mother cave in and give you whatever you want.
I told him straight out that I was a decade younger and about fifty IQ points stronger than his friends mothers. He was nagging very well; I was just more resistant. His self esteem returned, and I stopped worrying he had a brain tumor. Jesus!
The same kid, now ... ( 2 months ago by TheBadBandana)
The same kid, now an adult, heard how I cleverly cooked spicy beans and brown rice so he and little buddies would come off the school bus, smell the good food, and run in asking for it, b4 the McDonald's lovin' parents waddled home from work.
When I told him, he looked shocked and said, "But, wasn't that kind of manipulative?"
Yes it was, and since his brain is not pickled by fast food, he seems to make other consumer choices wisely.

No, it's not ethical, Lucy. You know that feeling you got when you paused and stammered when you tried to justify your actions? That was a portion of your soul you just sold.
And everything can be bought and sold, right Lucy?
Who are these ... ( 1 month ago by yocanbanconit)
Who are these parents who give their kids what they want? Are they simply the super rich? When I was a kid in the '60s I knew that asking my parents for a toy guaranteed I wouldn't get it! I had to be happy with whatever I got on my birthday or at Christmas. I'm a bit envious of kids today.

I love the movie, ... ( 1 month ago by WillWork4Food89)
I love the movie, but I disagree with it here. When parents substitute (outsource) parenting to the television, the child will be bombarded with ads. Can these be manipulative? Yes, but parents have been fighting against influence on their child for years. Did your parent ever say "Sticks and stones....?" Why is it any different if a corporation says something than if the kids at school say something?
Parents should ... ( 1 month ago by WillWork4Food89)
Parents should teach their children to ignore these messages, instead of excusing themselves from actual parenting, and blame the corporations. If you are a confident parent, you won't need to worry so much about advertisements.

You make a good point. Really, there is a spark of self-interest and greed in us all ...it is basically a natural tendancy because it promotes survival in the past. But it seems to me when people become excessivly powerful and wealthy, this can get inflated to huge proporions. I really can't even fathom how it must feel to be wealthy because I am every month just concentrating on paying bills and rent.

The problem is that ... ( 4 weeks ago by jbrentoniv)
The problem is that these advertisements do not respect traditional boundaries, lure children into the world of consumerism and are ultimately illusory. There is an interesting documentary titled "merchants of cool." It was made a few years back but it really sheds light into how far these companies are willing to go.
