i think it's cuz historically male artists are characterized by their song-writing abilities, rather than singing. i mean, aside from the old greats like frank sinatra, elvis, and bing crosby, modern male artists write and sing their music. in contrast female artists are largely noted for their vocal abilities, and have historically been given songs to sing by their recording companies.
thankfully artists like kelly clarkson and christina aguilera have begun to break that mold in pop music.

Phenomenal talent. I only listen to Hip-Hop and R&B my whole life... till I heard Carrie sing. That speaks volume. She's an absolute sweetheart. If there's a role model for young girls, you can't find a better one.
