Russian Low Altitude Parachuting

Video Description:
February 1998. Volosovo, Russia. A team of British, German and American paratroopers try the Soviet style low altitude air assault jump from an Antonov AN-2 aircraft. Jump altitude is from 100 meters (300 feet). Parachute is the Soviet D1-5-U with Z-5 reserve. That is 8-13 seconds from opening to impact (a bit longer here due to strong ground winds). I was the first guy out on the second stick!

Antonov An-2 was designed in 1948 and time proved it is really reliable. I jump from such plane every year and it's cool. You'll be surprised when they tell you when most of YOUR classic old planes first took off.

I have jumped from this plane and the same altitude. It was fun. Basically, this is a military exercise to learn how to jump secretly from a low flying aircraft. And don't laugh at An-2. This is the most reliable airplane ever buit. It is still the best for initial skydiving trainings.

This video affected some nostalgia. D1-5U is very big and heavy canopy. It weights about 25 kg (55 ponds) and made of a kind of tarpaulin. But it is real safe. About this jump - it was scary when instructor said "go" and i saw top of a trees right unger my feet. I think it was about 60-80 meters, even not 100. But it's fun.

Thre if another kind of low jumps with D-6 military parachute. You jump from 200 meters and pull after 3 seconds of free fall. No kidding. This is almost BASE. And russians started to do it long before a first BASE jump:)

D1-5-U is the most reliable parachute in the world. And in reality the altitude is too small only 100 meters so you dont need reserve parachute because you will not be able to use it.
