FJ Haydn was the greatest composer of S. Quartets..... Period!!! Yes, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and others wrote great pieces. But after evaluating everyone's complete set, its FJ Haydn's that stands-out as the best. Then someone please explain to me----Why he is not played as much as the others. I guess it takes someone to make a movie(Amadeus, Immortal Beloved) about you until they are recognized as genius.......

This is one of my favorite Haydns, and I play is a lot. I can't tell your ages, but here are some serious comments: The violist is very good, violins are each sharp, and play with a thin sound. You must learn to play with a round sound and not a piercing one. Perhaps you merely need better instruments. Eventually, good players need outstanding instruments, and I'm not sure your violins are as good as you are.

(more) This is possible the most Cello-friendly quartet Haydn ever wrote. Cellist, you need more interesting trills. You seem to have trouble with trilling. Please also don't stint on the 4rth finger vibrato.

Overall, there seems to be a lack of knowing which line should take precedence, and the dynamics are narrow. If your softs are genuinely SOFT, then the sudden fortes are Much more impressive. Remember, Haydn was the king of using dynamics in surprising and humorous ways.
Cellist. the ... ( 1 year ago by PTCello)
Cellist. the opening figure: instead of 4 2 4 12... don't use 4rth finger. it is always the weakest finger, and you want strong vibrato on the D... try 3 1 2(or 3) 12. if you use 2, it requires an extension, but it's worth it, because 2 has the strongest vibrato...
And on long notes, generally avoid 4rth finger. In measure 21, play that G with 2nd finger. M 36, play the G with 3rd. The music is slow enough that the exnension won't cause a problem.

overall the vibrato needs to blend better...piano passages need to be much more piano.
I really enjoyed listening to this several times... I wish the camera had been better placed, and I hope to hear more from you guys as time goes on. God bless you all...

What you say is true enough, it's a Youtube video. My one criticism is the curtain hanging down behind them absorbing the sound.

I can tell you love the music. Haydn quartets are so wonderful to hear. I'm hooked on them. I'm strictly a vocalist, but I say stick together, listen to yourselves & your intonation, tempos just half a notch faster, phrasing so that notes in a phrase have different intensities (think of how we speak and where we place emphasis), and you'll sound even more amazing. Go ladies!

I disagree with ... ( 6 months ago by TheHumannBee)
I disagree with this. I think the 4rd finger should be used more often, because then it won't be the weakest finger and you won't be handicapped by having to avoid using it in some passages. That's just my (my teacher's) opinion.
What about ... ( 6 months ago by TheHumannBee)
What about Beethoven? He didn't have a famous movie based on his life, but his late quartets are arguably some of the most intellectually deep pieces ever written. I think Beethoven's late quartets tromp Haydn's, or anyone's, for that matter.
The problem with ... ( 6 months ago by PTCello)
The problem with finger 4 is fundamental weakness. Excercise and use will help, but it is always the least of the 4 fingers, and on long notes, the third is usually a better choice. As an example, try the opening two notes of "the swan" with 4,3. Then try with 3,2. There is a big difference in vibrato. It's certainly OK to use 4, but 3 is usually better. Just a different approach.
Beethoven did have ... ( 6 months ago by GeniusHaydn)
Beethoven did have a movie made about him. Actually I think two have been recently made, Immortal Beloved and Copying Beethoven. I enjoy his SQ as well as Schubert, Mendelssohn, Boccherini, Vanhal, Pleyel, & Dittersdorf. But Haydn's have such profound moments different from the others. I love B's but prefer H's. B's slow mvts are sometimes sad and drearing. And his late SQ drag on. It's good to expand and try something different but don't lose your audience.

You can't compare Haydn's quartets from the 1770s-1780s to the Beethoven quartets written some 30-40 years later. By then, the string quartet had undergone a total metamorphosis, just like every other genre.
