Aldous Huxley wrote "A Brave New World", not Orwell. They had pretty different ideas of where the world is headed. Vague similarities at best. On another note, I wouldn't worry about the Union. What we need to worry about is these unaccountable private tyrannies (i.e Corporations) that have more power than most nations, but people have no input on. They don't respect borders, so independent U.S. or N.A.U. doesn't really matter to them. They can move to whatever country they please.

This is a great idea. The US is no match for the European Unions's industrial quality, or for China's cheap labor by the millions, and they know it.
Besides, you can apply for a job anywhere in a continent-size country without any restriction, and don't forget that wages are a lot higher in Canada!
If you fear your freedom will be "lost" (I can't see how), with Canada on board, wiretapping will be a little more difficult!
