Well for me, I stopped reading Potter after GoF and haven't seen a Potter film since GoF, so I know nothing about Voldemort's childhood.
But anyway, Christian Coulson is so hot and innocent-looking that you WANT him to have been good first, followed by a turn to the "dark side" much like Anakin Skywalker. Cute, innocent child who by wanting and seeking great power becomes a dark lord. (Is it coincidence that Voldemort and Vader begin with the letter V?)
And besides...I'm a dreamer. ;)

well read the half blood prince and u will discover tom riddle was never nice he just acted like it to keep people off his trail for ultimate power so like i said i can't feel sorry for him but i do feel sorry for lord vader he started life nice and innocent even as a slave but he fell in love and like master yoda said a fear of loss is a path way to the dark side and thats exactly why anakin became twisted and evil

Though I suppose canon-wise there are few reasons to feel sorry towards Tom Riddle as JKR made him completely evil, born evil, and in my opinion, completely one dimensional. Because of that, people find reasons for his fall into darkness as there normally should have been. People aren't born evil, it is their experiences that shape them into the people that they are. Tom Riddle could have been such a complex character, yet instead JKR made him into something that was meant to hate.

I cannot provide a link over youtube, but if you pull up the chat transcript, JKR very clearly states that things would have been different had Merope survived.
Though he was definitely odd at birth, not crying and such, it was never stated in the books nor did JKR ever say that Tom was "born evil", and as you've noted, people aren't "born evil".
Though Voldemort's history does not justify his actions, a closer look at HBP shows he was not "born evil".

Because. Tom's mother died only an hour into his life, and his father, who was very much aware of Merope's pregnancy, never sought looking for him.
Mrs. Cole's own words make it known they pinned the boy off as odd from the start.
Tom Riddle's own words make it known that the staff of the orphanage chose to throw him at doctors rather than share any sort of maternal affection.
In conclusion, Tom was brought into the world with everything against him, not shown love nor compassion. (cont.)

It is anyone's right to feel sorry for Tom. His mother chose to die, not taking her baby into account at all, and his father left them both.
He had no love from anyone since his childhood.
