The softer, the longer, and yes; recommended.
1) gives you more control over the lines and values you create
2) makes your 'sharp' point last longer
3) gives you reach. The long point allows your hand to be further back from paper so you don't smear your drawing.
4) gives you a finer line so when your designing, composing and measuring your drawing your line will be fine, clean and very very light... so it will fade away after you build your drawing.
Oh, and, kneaded eraser=50% genius, 50% win. I've never heard of that thing before, and it really is amazing. You can make inverted pencil drawings with it!(And bubble letters)
