Actually, the drum ... ( 4 months ago by bluudevil)
Actually, the drum machine did not make him lazy, it made him rich. Also, he didn't stop becoming innovative, he switched was he was being innovative on. He became the most innovative drum machine programmer the world had at that time, and, his programming holds up to anything going on today as well.

Blu..it made him rich, lazy & FAT. There's nothing innovative about plugging a drum machine into a wall outlet & turning it on.
Programming isn't DRUMMING.
Music, specifically rhythm, is rooted in emotion feeling & grooves that a computer chip can'' recognize.
I still love PC and his drumming, but he was a better drummer when he was still financially struggling. He was a musician, then. I can get any kid to program a drum machine. That's just another computer.

You might be able to get any kid to program a drum machine, but he won't be able to program it anywhere near as well as Phil Collins. I never said programming was drumming. He changed the instrument he innovated on. Maybe, he figured he took his drumming as far as he could and discovered he really enjoyed programming. He certainly found out he was very good at it. I wouldn't say he was lazy either. You couldn't get away from his music on the radio in the 80s. That takes work, not laziness.

Blu...I think it's safe to say we're both PC fans but I just can't get on board with putting "drum machine" and "innovation" in the same sentence. For example, listen again to this track. The percussion is all hands and feet. I can't give the same respect to a silicone chip or the press of a button with one finger. PC was all over the radio in the 1980s because of marketing. In the US, its all marketing. That's why so much great music remains unheard here.

Have you ever tried programming beats? Sure, anyone can make "beats", just like anyone can play "beats" on a drumset. It takes a master to play the kit as well as PC, and it takes a rhythmic genius to program as well as he did. Try copying his programming, its about as hard to do as it is to copy his playing. Finesse man, it's all about finesse.

Oh how they laughed at Collins. Oh how they mocked what they thought he was. Than God some of us know where he came from and what he travelled through to get where he was. By the time he was pop, he was only firing on two cylinders. Wasted and misunderstood.

I agree but Genesis stopped using thos unusual time signatures and changes in the eighties so the need for Collins to drum those time sigs was gone. He can still do it if the music demands. In my view he should have stayed behind the drums. That's where he excels.
