The way I understand it, the wall of separation of church and state is supposed to prevent the state from persecuting minority faiths. The US Senate opens every day with prayer, and it is commonplace throughout state legislatures as well. Maybe someday someone will bring a lawsuit against it, but I'm not sure exactly what harm the prayer does that the government should be protecting people from.

Informative post. I appreciate it. All I know is, while watching I felt like I was watching a church service rather than a vote and it struck me as very odd... I couldn't help thinking what if that were someone of a different faith. which led me to consider those in the crowd who may have been of other faiths and how awkward it must have been. Then... the constitutionality.
