. \ ' UBUNTU LINUX ' / .: Valve's game Team Fortress 2

Uploaded by: rofthorax
Video Description:
This is a demonstration of Valve's Team Fortress (a game inspired by the popular Quake Mod, running on Valve's "Source" Game Engine) running atop the Wine Windows Emulator (actually Wine implements the Windows API, making Windows programs appear as Native Linux programs, complete with sound and 3D support. Wine supports both OpenGL 2.0 and DirectX upto 9.0c. As you can see
Wine works well enough to enthrall the gamer and make them forget they are running on a free and open source Operating System, Ubuntu 7.10.
Now Wine may not run all Windows games, but it's an argument for why we should need Windows to play video games at all. Take this idea further, one could create a version of Ubuntu Linux centered primarily on playing video games for any platform, even playing games natively.
I have demonstrations of ETQW, the latest video game from ID Software, the ones who began the 3D industry with Doom and Quake. ID made a native client, that is a program specifically designed to run on Linux, that will allow linux users to play ETQW with the same capabilities as that of the Windows version. Including mic support.
Difference is, I only paid for ETQW and Valve's Organge Box, I didn't have to pay for Ubuntu nor Wine, as the source code (the programs before they are compiled into executables) is completely free and open to developement.
This means that regardless of what advances Microsoft is to make with Windows, Linux users gain the benefits of a Windows user without buying windows, and without being locked into the Windows platform.
This allows for those wishing to get off the Windows platform, the ability to run applications they must while adopting the free and open source environment of Linux.
And did I mention its much easier to use than Windows?

Did you manage to get this game running in Ubuntu 8.04? I managed to install steam and the games. Steam works fine, but trying to run the games just changes the resolution but doesn't load the game. I only see the valve logo thing ( the guy with the valve on his head) and then it stops loading. I heard the older version of Wine ran it just fine. Thanks in advanced for any help. I really want to play this on Linux.

Inside scoop: Valve has been hiring people to port the Source engine to GNU/Linux. Nothing official from Valve, this is a leak.

8.04 is demented, when I tried it things were failing all over the place, they changed too much stuff.. I guess for some people it may be okay, but I'm probably going to wait until the next release to upgrade.. I'm using 7.10 32-bit now, I tried the 64-bit and others, and lost interest and returned to what was working well..

You're running a windoze program, and not a linux one, and if valve were so 'hardcore' they would support ALL platforms it's "customers" (FANBOYS) use.
I'm sick of seeing this ignorance. Quit being a fucking apologist and QUIT USING WINE. Don't let these corporations dictate the operating system you use or force you to use an emulator.
But I guess that makes me some kind of nutjob...to want support...well id software has no problems supporting open source and never has.
Well to get people ... ( 6 months ago by rofthorax)
Well to get people onto the platform you have to make them comfortable with the platform, and one way you do that is you lure them over with programs they are familiar with on the other platform.. As they become comfortable, they will begin to notice what is on Ubuntu and such, and will have the freedom to do whatever they want, which is all that is important..
So, when Microsoft pressures people like me, I go somewhere else, and steve balmer cries "Come back, you idiots!! That's not fair!"
The good thing ... ( 6 months ago by rofthorax)
The good thing about wine, is that if developers are wine compliant, they are at least windows compliant.. That way Microsoft can't hook them on any other API's, as Wine catches up, more and more of windows features will be implemented.. Finally there will be no reasons to be on the Windows platform, that's the best.. Wine is an API wrapper, not an emulator so much.. It doesn't require a copy of windows.. It's actually a Windows API implementation.. So Linux + Wine is essentially cloning windows

Yeah, I have an 8600 now.. I have an 8600 when initially playing Half Life 2, but it was overheating and causing all sorts of video artifacts, but then I got another 8600, from XFX, and things are much smoother now. But I'm playing Guild Wars, I'm a level 2 Necromancer/Elementalist. Cool thing about Guild Wars, I think it is, Male Enchanters dance like Napoleon Dynamite. Male Assasins can pop.. And Male Archers can do windmills.
Google "guild wars dances"

Correction, it is the Male Ritualist that dance like napoleon dynamite.. I can only get that if I get the upgrades.. The Male Elementalist has a sucky dance, but he does well in combat..
Guild Wars is great if you consider that it has no online fee.. But the lands beautiful and it almost never crashes.

The problem was what I said "A version of".. I should have said "inspired by".. So I changed that.. I hate it when people take words so literally.. But you didn't know what I meant.

Now that's better! :-P I'm an avid source modder, and the little things like that tend to stand out for me...

Don't know.. You could try it, I think there is a version of wine that runs on windows. I know how silly that sounds, but I saw that there was a port on the wine site.

It's not a windows emulator, it is a windows API emulator.. That means it has the efficiency of the Linux OS behind it, not the inefficiency of windows. I think that's why WINE's acronym is "Wine in no emulator".

The well written ... ( 3 months ago by rofthorax)
The well written ones yes, the ones that are too dependent on Windows API's and those games with too much protection (like those that use Punk Buster) will likely not work on Wine. But over time Wine will become more compatible.
What wine is, is about 5 megs of executable code that translate Windows API calls into Linux API calls. Note that as technologies get more optimal, they tend to run the same and accept the same sorts of parameters.
Also the proportion ... ( 3 months ago by rofthorax)
Also the proportion of time it takes to translate a call to the time it takes to execute the call is miniscule, it's not like translating and instruction into a virtual machine.. WINE is a recursive acronym for "Wine Is No Emulator".
WINE in short is a interface wrapper on linux and linux libraries that makes Linux look like Windows to a Windows application. The difference is how well Linux maps to Window with wine. WINE is possible because both Linux and Windows run on the Intel processor.
BTW, there is a ... ( 3 months ago by rofthorax)
BTW, there is a version of WINE that runs on the new Intel based macs that will permit a Macintosh to play the same games that Linux can with WINE. There is two good reasons for developers to adopt the development of applications for WINE than designing specifically for Windows, true cross platform compatibility, without Java (and probably why Sun is tempted to Open Source Java now). There is also tools being developed to allow developers to port their programs to other platforms using WINE.

I don't like Team Fortress all that much because the maps are too small and tight, its virtually unplayable, especially after having played games like 2142, Half Life 2, Guild Wars, etc.. YEs, this is around the 3rd or 4th time I've played this, but I haven't played it since because it is confusing and not really that much fun.. It's a bit like playing Quake or something..
Actually Quake was ... ( 3 months ago by rofthorax)
Actually Quake was more fun, as I recall.. Lots of hidden areas, Quad, and some levels had zero gravity and the ability to customize maps and sounds..
Valve carried on some of that by permitting people to play games like HL2 Deathmatch. BTW, the VOIP works over WINE. But Team Fortress is just cute.. It's not much more fun than Battlefield 1942.. And valve better realize that large maps are where the fun is.. But you can disagree..
