Well if you can ... ( 1 month ago by RetrogradeRenegade)
Well if you can define 'musical value' then we can talk. Music is entirely, and I do mean entirely, subjective. There is absolutely no way to quantify the value of music, not the influence it has exerted, not the cultural effects it has had, nothing. There will always be people who don't like The Beatles.
Response to music is entirely emotional, and personal for each and every listener. And really, talking about it is silly. You can't reason someone into liking music, so why try?

Additionally, with reference to gimmicks - Everything is a gimmick if you're looking from a great enough distance. Rock and roll was a gimmick. Musical styles and approaches boil up and fade away in no time at all, and we move on to something new. Nothing in music is permanent, I'm tempted to say not even the twelve notes we all use.
Please. Stop joking ... ( 1 month ago by boraxthedecapitator)
Please. Stop joking around. There are objective standards for judging music. Such as whether or not a song is easy, medium, or difficult for the average musician to play. How about technicality, originality? These are objective. It's also objective to judge whether a song is melodic or discordant, chaotic or peaceful, etc. There are personal preferences therein, yes, but those criteria are overall objective. Liking or disliking a given melody, however, that's the only thing subjective about it.
Musical styles are ... ( 1 month ago by boraxthedecapitator)
Musical styles are not necessarily gimmicks. Having a cutie-pie Asian singer say "panda" repeatedly is not really an "approach" to music. A gimmick is something a musician does to attract listeners or distinguish himself but doesn't truly add to the music. STOP speaking in such absurd absolutes like "nothing in music is permanent." You sound like a twelve-year-old pseudo-intellectual, and making a statement like that I hope you're not much older than that.

lyrics are, almost ... ( 1 month ago by PengBobSA)
lyrics are, almost without exception, shitty poetry and it's much better when the voice is used as just another instrument rather than a way to deliver the songwriter's 8th grade-quality scribbles
if difficulty and technicality were valid criteria to judge a song then Malmsteen would be considered a great composer and guys like Barber and Satie would be called hacks
good god kid you're really fucking dumb
I agree with your ... ( 1 month ago by boraxthedecapitator)
I agree with your standpoint on lyrics and vocals in music 100%, but you must agree that some lyrics are shittier than other. Repeating "panda" over and over again is pretty shitty, especially when it's not backed up with good vocalization.
And once again, the only forensic strategy you know is to straw man me by taking my argument to an extreme. I like melody, too, not pure technicality. Malmsteen is a good guitarist but a bad musician.
For the record, I'm not a kid, and my IQ is 145ish.

i dont think the vocals are meant to be especially thought provoking and philosophical in lyrics. it's just what their style is. it adds more to their feeling of just simply jamming.
Oh dear, we're ... ( 1 month ago by RetrogradeRenegade)
Oh dear, we're getting into IQ are we? That is no way to support an argument, and as a value is dubious at best. What are you trying to demonstrate? 'My IQ is high so my points are inherently more valid than yours'? If that is all you have left to validate your points then you have no argument left. Fine, objectively state what an 'average' musician is. Measurements, please, it is objective. Measure discordance! Define 'peaceful', 'chaotic'. Such vague words for such objective values.
'You sound like a ... ( 1 month ago by RetrogradeRenegade)
'You sound like a twelve-year-old pseudo-intellectual'. And you accuse others of making a straw man of you? Why say this to discredit my argument? It has no place in reasoned discussion other than to rile. You are beginning to sound desperate.
'Absurd absolutes'? And yet you claim that the quality of music is inherently objective and has no basis in opinion! Fine. Prove it. Show me the scale, the measurement, the value with which you measure the quality of music. Do you want my IQ first?

Borax, WTF? Deerhoof make some of the most ingenious music there is. Their songs are by turns harmonically sophisticated (milkman, running thoughts) bludgeoningly hard (this magnificent bird will rise, dummy discards a heart) abstractly splattered (c, frenzied handsome, hello!) and purely playful (+81, flower) usually all in the same song. they manage to be very surprising without sounding random at all. i'm sorry you don't think pandas are a suitable subject for a song, but i like pandas.

one more thing: i don't think this is one of their better songs, but there is that moment when the music winds down and the drummer sings softly and slowly in a choir-like voice: panda.
