Imagine CoS went a little differently. Just a tad. Before Ginny ever got the diary - it was Hermione's and she used it to go into the past where she fell madly in love with the charming Tom Riddle. Well one day, the dairy disappears and the next thing you know, Harry's battling a basilisk. The diary is destroyed and Harry never tells Hermione that Tom Riddle grew up to become Lord Voldemort.
Haunted by memories of Tom, the story opens with Hermione feeling like she's being watched and followed everywhere she goes. Little does she know her new stalker is what's left of her Tom Riddle who has carried on loving her for the fifty years since she left. Using her love for Tom, Voldemort influences Hermione in ways like making sure she remains safe, doesn't get on the wrong side of any Death Eaters and also making sure she doesn't get too close to Ron and Harry as well.
When he becomes re-corporal again, Hermione realises that Tom and Voldemort are one in the same and she is torn about what to do. She still loves Tom so goes to find Voldemort, hoping she can see past the horrid things he's done. However, when she finds him, she realises he's too far changed and tries to run away from him. Voldemort, still madly in love and wanting Hermione with him and safe, pursues her but she still refuses to come back, this is when Lord Voldemort's darker side truly rears its ugly head...
Sorry that the video's hard to follow - I wanted to get across Hermione's confusion between Tom and Voldemort.
