Actually FallenAngel80, Vince wrote the first verse at Keith Whitley's funeral but didn't finish the rest of the song until Vince brother's death. So it's actually a tribute to both of them. It's a beautiful song though it's accompanied by sad memories of loss and happy memories of joy.

reading your advise was what I needed to hear, thank you waybent335. My baby brother.. he was humble and respected others always, just like our dad. My dad suffered hard from bone cancer until his passing and my brother passed on instantly from crashing into a telephone pole. I will pray for all who are hurting from the loss of your loved ones. Jesus blessed us all with this beautiful song. We MUST stay close to the Lord as he LOVES each of YOU dearly. Keep on a walkin' and a talkin' with God :)

I haven't been able to listen to this song for over 7 years, since my dad's funeral in 2001. I still get teary-eyed listening to it. My dad died in a car accident on April 6, 2001. The song is extremely sad and I can barely tolerate it without thinking a lot about my dad, about my own life.

Vince Gill was my Grand Mothers favorite singer. His brother passed and this is why he made this song. This song came out about a month before my Grand Mother passed. I can't hear this song without falling to pieces. She has been gone for over 10 years. This song will always have a place in my heart. Beautiful song.

I Love this song. My husband of 42 years passed away 1/20/08. This song gives me comfort when the grief gets too hard to bear. Vince Gill's voice and his musical ability touches so many lives. He is such a giving, caring person - you can feel his compassion through his music. God bless you Gill and your family - WE LOVE YOU!!!! Don't ever quit writing and singing such beautiful songs.

Vince wrote the first verse years before the second. The first verse was for Keith Whitley, the lines "you weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the pain" are from a Keith Whitley song. When Vince's brother died he wrote the second verse.
