They were not making fun of Green Day's song "Who wrote Holden Caulfield". Interesting note for those who aren't already in the know. Mike Dirnt from Green Day played Bass on the studio version of this song, and the whole "How to make enemies and irritate people" album which has just been re-issued recently on Asian Man records. So if you are one of thosen that was just clued in you should think about tracking it down on CD as it's a damned fine release!

yeahhhhhh. okay. this is how it works. J.D Salinger wrote Catcher in the rye. which is billie joes favorite book, so he wrote who wrote holden caulfield, which is the main character, the character was based on early john lennon, in his working class years. which then, Mark David Chapman, used as the motive to kill john lennon, so Mark Chapman killed about someone he was subconscientiously reading about.

This is a terrible song and there is no reason it should be called I wrote Holden Caulfield. It is way out of context and the only reason they named it that is because of Greendays more popular and better song "Who wrote Holden Caulfield".

Better is relative. Mike Dirnt, Green Day's bassist, played for Screeching Weasel for a short while. The two bands were friends... Screeching Weasel actually had more success than Green Day earlier in their career. Screeching Weasel laid the foundation for bands like Green Day and Blink 182. This isn't the only Screeching Weasel song that was written as a 'response' to another song. "I Wanna Be A Homosexual" was recorded in response to the Sloppy Seconds song "I Don't Wanna Be A Homosexual"
