It's a NY Met Opera performance from the early 90's I believe. It was simulcast on PBS and in stereo on public radio.I recorded it on memorex tape but taped over it...

Based on the DVD that I have ordered of this performance (featuring Luciana Serra as the Queen of the Night), the boys are Ted Huffman, Benjamin Schott, and Per-Christian Brevig. Either way, I absolutely adore this performance. the boys are by far the best that I have heard thus far, and Miss Battle is amazing as always. Please disregard an earlier post I made, if it posts, I was OBVIOUSLY mistaken. ;-) PBS listed the wrong credits.

Good, love this Opera (in original version)
By the way, i hate Magic Flute English versions, everytime i hear one i get really disgusted. It MUST be in German, beacuse the languaje is very important for the sound.
PD: I'm Spanish, so don't think i say this cuz i'm German ^^

I agree. There's nothing worse than hearing a piece done in English when it was meant to be performed in a different language.

I would almost ... ( 9 months ago by bugsduggan)
I would almost agree, however I recently worked on an english translation of the flute which was almost certainly the best transaltion of any foreign opera I've ever heard. I would say that it didn't feel like the same show in english but it was very watchable!
Interesting: ... ( 8 months ago by UlfenDaddy)
Interesting: Paradise Lost certainly was written in English, aber Die verlorenem Paradies war the basis for Haydn's oratorio; musically it's written in German, and very difficult to try to 'reinstall' Milton onto Haydn's translation.
That's fine if the ... ( 8 months ago by edders05)
That's fine if the German translation was set to music - it's where (for example) a German text is set to music, but then people translate it and sing it in English...
Exactly-- which ... ( 8 months ago by UlfenDaddy)
Exactly-- which makes it doubly weird. The BOOK is English, then translated to German and adapted and syllabified to be the Libretto. Now it's re-translated BACK to English and syllabified in order to make it singable!
When I directed it, I made certain singers simply black out the English text: the ideas were that far removed from what the text actually says.
JUST SING IT IN GERMAN.

Very cool- in what capacity did you 'work on' such a translation? The only time I conducted Magic Flute was Detroit in 1978, in ENGLISH, which has forever screwed up my mental concept of the opera, as I didn't fully know the score prior to that production.
NEVER AGAIN.

why should german speaking artist write a opera in english? it was definitly in german originaly!!! where did you get the information from, that is was written in english?

hmm, Handel did, hehe! it's definitely German though, whatever language Mozart and his librettist's inspirations were written in, they wrote their story in German of course, and rightly. it's beautiful to hear German sung.
