It is a Spanish dance that there have adapted composers like Marin Marais, Corelli, Vivaldi, Lully, etc.
In this time it was very common to adapt popular topics, as the "Remix" of nowadays.
...............
Es una danza española que han versionado compositores como Marin Marais, Corelli, Vivaldi, Lully, etc.
En esa epoca era muy comun versionar temas popurales, como los "Remix" de hoy en dia.

Too bad they edited out some of the best parts. Very nice nonetheless.

I get the sense that these dancers are really recreating the baroque style of ballet authentically. Very enjoyable!

I'm not quite sure, but either the "La Folia" theme was comceived by Marin marais or he was the first/one of the first to bring it into instrumental music.

Corelli's is the better one. It's more defined in its variations. It's also for solo violin.

Yeah, I'm learning Corelli's right now and I love it to death. I'm not surprised I like it so much though. I've always been die-hard Baroque.
La Folia was an old ... ( 6 months ago by Merryjest)
La Folia was an old spanish folk melody that many baroque composers used for variation treatment. The earliest treatment is not Marais' but by Juan del Enzina in 1520. More recent examples include Beethoven hiding the theme in the Andante Con Motto of his 5th symphony.

I prefer Marais variations. Although, all the other variations are wonderful, and its how many variations came from a single work which is also a "Variation" of the typical spanish folia.
Lully was the first ... ( 6 months ago by juan486)
Lully was the first one to bring it into instrumental music, meaning as to be known as a dance by the royalty. Marais, who was Lully's apprentice for some time, made the Folia variations from the standard theme Lully composed for winds and strings.

Unfortunately, they do not play the entire piece. You can hear the complete piece on my channel if you are interested.

I played this with a chamber group of six plus a pianist at a music camp last week, and. . .I'm sorry, I hated it. I play cello, and it was probably one of the most boring songs I've played. It's so repetitive! We only did 8 of the 20 variations, but I did get to play the 14th variation, which actually has some moving 8th notes. Sorry, guys.
that's because you ... ( 4 months ago by fishcop444)
that's because you played it on a cello and with a piano. Try playing it on a viol with a bunch more strings and then try improvising a bit. Then it is worth playing....or buy a really good recording with an original instrument and you'll think different! Try Jordi Savall...
