I would say it is american as none of the moves are in the original "authentic" context of ethnic dance in isolation it is a mixing of different styles from different cultures approached with a western eye. I think for me in this contect America represents the facilitator of combining these artforms as itself is a huge melting pot for different races, ethnicities and cultures from around the world.

The history of the world is trading ideas cutlture and goods and adapting for their own uses. As long as you seek to educate yourself on the origins of things, understand what you are doing, don't represent it as anything else, acknowledge your influences, and approach your art with love and care i see no problem. x kt

I agree with you wherever performances are concerned mixing flamenco, indian dance, polynesian, breakdance, hip hop bellydance, and that to industrial or D&B Western music :)

i think bellyrolling while shimmying takes a CRAZY amount of time to master.
But my (Persian) dance instructor (doing nothing related to yoga or tribalesque isolations and drilling) can do it well - I guess it s just a matter of practice, and not only the yoga gurus among the bellydance community can master it ;)

Rachel Brice looks like she just bellyrolls in normal life, like it's so natural that she walks and bellyrolls without even thinking about it.
I'm betting that she doesn't even think about the bellyroll when she's doing it. She probably only concentrates on the shimmy.
That's how I've heard you do layers. You focus on only one thing and let the other occur naturally.
