"Shane" played by Alan Ladd and "Wilson" played by Jack Palance in final shootout of the western movie classic "Shane." "You're a low down, Yankee liar." Palance was one of the best actors of the ear and could do one arm pushups at age 73.

One of the best endings to a western movie ever made.....I loved the part where Shane calls Wison a "low down Yankee liar", and the dog lying by the bar, slowly gets up and leaves.....They don't make em like that anymore.

I've watched this shootout probably 20 or 30 times. It is one of the best, most intense scenes I've ever seen in a Western or any movie for that matter. Note that when Joey shouts, "Shane, look out!", Shane whirls around and his gun goes off too soon, and so he actually shoots at the floor. But, the bad guy falls from the second floor in spite of this. Still, an awesome scene that I'll never forget.

Who is Shane? ... ( 1 week ago by sforegon)
Who is Shane? Where did he come from? What is in his past that we never get to know? One hint is in this final scene. When he tells Wilson that "you're a lowdown Yankee liar", it suggests that he is a disenfranchised Southerner, a cast off from the Civil War. He avenges the murder of Torey, who was a confirmed "Johnny Reb" in the story (Elijah Cook). Shane is an ex-Confederate. That's my guess.

If I remember correctly, in the book there's a fan-shaped spread of blood above Shane's gun-belt, so he probably does die..We had to read the book at school, long ago. Loved it.
Best western novel. Best western movie.

There have been some superb westerns, SHANE is still the BEST of all without doubt. Ladd & Palance were fantastic, the direction likewise. The dog getting up & leaving when Wilson stands up is a stroke of genius. Note the dog initially remains in situ when Shane(good guy in white hat!) walks past. However, the dog senses Wilson's malignant character and escapes asap. Brilliant. Wilson couldn't take Shane, nor will any other film! Fantastic.

A lot of people forget that Brandon DeWilde was nominated for an Academy Award for this role in this movie..He was suberb as "Little Joey" and added to the reason this movie is an all-time classic...Brandon DeWilde was killed in a traffic accident when he was only 30 years old in 1972.
