there is no "jam" in this song. the entire piece is composed. most versions sound exactly like this depending on how sober trey was at the time. they sounded good back in 98 though, i used to have this whole performance on VHS. the "Taste" and "Ghost" from this session were concise, but really good.

I wasn't knocking Guyute. just noting that it was composed not improvised, so not really a "jam." if trey had composed more from the mid 90's on, phish might still be together.

The close environment in this performance seems to distract the band a bit. I mean, the beginning just sounds a little rough to me. There are some mistakes, --almost sounds like it wasn't rehearsed well enough. Don't mind my critical comment , it's not meant to take anything away from the band or this particular performance. It's a really difficult through-composed piece, and mistakes happen sometimes. The energy definitely picks up as it goes on.

i don't wanna sound mean or anything, but anyone who is a real Phish fan would know that none of that was jamming, the whole 10 minutes of it was memorized by the band, which i think would be harder than improvisation anyway.

There is a couple spots where they demonstrate thier improve skills like at 6:45 for example. If you compare this cut vs. the album you will find quite a few differences. I'm sure that since this was more of a so called "formal" atmosphere they decided to putt a limit on their songs. Phish Rocks! I have to say that I think they are the most talented musicians, as an individual and as a group! PhIsH

every time i listen to story of the ghost, this song comes out of nowhere and blows my mind. it almost doesnt fit on the album, but at the same time, its my favorite song on the album.
