=) Your not the only one. While your at it, watch Orlando, by Virginia Wolf. Theres some rather pretty music in that also. Altough, I might be mistaken, since it's 16 years since I waatched it from my little black and white ;)
Now I have the dvd and should watch it some day. Anyone, a true friend of baroque music in oulu, is welcome to join me =)

Hello my Finnish friend! (I had to look that one up. :-D) I'll look into that movie. Also, I checked out your page and I see you like the King's Singers, too. I love them, especially the bass and the countertenors!

Oh the King Singers are wonderfull. True =) On the topic of farinelli I can also suggest Hilliard Ensemble, especially the stuff from the nineties. They usually do obly spiritual music from the medieval and reneissance (spelling?) period. There a blast ;)

It seems the voice of the original castrati was so pure and yet so hard to recreate, that the filmakers had to resource to a digital generated voice for the character of Farinelli in this movie.

As a matter of fact, my brother worked on the soundtrack of this movie. The voice was created by mixing male & female voices. On the credits, it lists both singers. It wasn't digitally created, but where the two voices overlapped, those notes had to be blended using software.

"Soy como una nave que movida
por varios escollos en medio de las olas
se confunde, y asustada
anda zurcando en el profundo mar
Pero en ver la querida
costa abandona las olas
y el infiel viento
y se dirige al puerto para descansar"

Hmmm...I get your drift...but this was not so much something complicated, there was such a demand for these poor boy-men then. Most castrati were poor families meal tickets. There was no real choosing on the boys side, the real monster was the popular demand for them. It still makes me sick to see how far people will go for "popular demand"

its not "self" mutilation. their was no choice on the boys part, they can't possibly be compared to an artist who (misguided or not) chooses to mutilate herself.
I never said it was ... ( 7 hours ago by coloraturacontralto)
I never said it was self mutilation. I also didn't compare. I was merely pointed out that this happens in other art as well and is still happening today. Farinelli didn't have a choice. His family did. He actually came from a wealthy family. When his father died they decided to castrate the boy. A lot of these boys died from the operation and the drugs which were given following the procedure. My comment on the artist today was only to point out that mutilation for the sake of art still happens.
