PlusLevee Breaks Add to Midwest Flood ProblemsLevee Breaks Add to Midwest Flood ProblemsThe Associated PressPeople continue to battle high water in Indiana, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. (June 10)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] (VIDEO OF BROKEN LEVY FROM AIR BOAT)Ad another state to the list of those deluged with high water. Two levee breaks have caused water to pour across 50 square miles of an Illinois county which borders already hard-hit Indiana. The Embarrass River exploded through right here spilling millions of gallons of water.(VIDEO OF SWAMPED CAMPERS AND STRANDED JIM MCCLASKEY)But the Lawrence Rod and Gun Club was in the flood path.RV's are swamped and Jim McClasky is stranded on someone else's property.JIM MCCKLASKEY/STRANDED IN LAWRENCEVILLE"WE COME IN THE BACK ROAD. IT WASN'T BAD WHEN WE COME THROUGH. WE FOOLED AROUND ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO OVER THERE. WHEN WE TRIED TO LEAVE. WE TURNED AROUND IT GOT TOO DEEP."MARK CARLSON/STANDUPThis is normally farmland as far as the eye can see. When the Embarrass River l
evy broke, the landscaped turned into a lake. [Notes:map pull out effect?]In addition to Illinois, severe flooding extends across several midwest states: Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. [Notes:wisc] The village of Gays Mills, Wisconsin was inundated during the weekend, just 10 months after another devastating flood left residents working to rebuild homes and businesses. The swollen Kickapoo River engulfed nearly the entire town. Almost a quarter of the 625 residents have evacuated. Officials say the very survival of the town is at stake.(SOT: LARRY MCCARN/GAYS MILLS VILLAGE PRESIDENT) I'M REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT, YES. I AM NOT SURE HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL STAY OR EVEN COME BACK OR EVEN THE BUSINESSES, WHAT'LL HAPPEN TO THEM.Wisconsin's governor will ask for a federal disaster declaration later this week. About 70 miles north, in Lake Delton, families are surveying the damage left behind after Lake Delton overflowed, then emptied. It swept away several homes in the process. UST NOT SURE WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT BECAUSE IF YOU LOOK OVER WE DON'T EVEN HAVE LAND ANYMORE. [Notes:pool]In Elnora, Indiana, the breadth of the problem can been seen from the air. The White River has overrun it's banks--reaching 16 feet above flood stage in some places. The state got two inches of rain Monday, on top of the 11 inches received in places over the weekend [Notes:woi] Iowans continue to sandbag to try to hold back the water. The governor has declared emergencies in 31 counties. The downpours that led to all this flooding are also impacting crops. Flooded corn fields have made it difficult for farmers to plant, pushing corn prices to record highs on commodities exchanges. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

That is so not true and that hurts how the world look at us. I owned my home in New Orleans and had insurance. I rebuild my home with the insurance money and guess what, it was lost in a fire a year later. My insurance company refused to give me what my house was worth. also, rent trippled, pay is rediculous, its really hard. some ppl did make it bad for others but the gov. really not doing there part. All the money that ppl around the world didn't go on rebuilding New Orleans

so5044life, Every word I typed is absolutely true. While your situation is sad, it is largely anectdotal. Will you sit around and wait for someone to hand you some money? I doubt it. You'll get up, adapt and probably be better for having overcome such a hardship. So why would you tolerate any less from your neighbors? The fact is that too many people in NO simply don't know how to care for themselves because they were never expected to. So they remain dependant upon their government masters.

LOL @ TJLAWSON20. No, they are helping each other with the sand bags and everything. We didn't have that down here. It was so different. We had looters, police, swat, national guard not helping us. I was stuck down here due to my job. Did you know what one of the swat members told me after I asked for help because one of my co-workers was having a heartatache ( deceased now) We can't help ourselves. PPL looked at looting more then the reality.

Petra, I thank your husband for his service to this great nation and thank you for your honesty. You are obviously not the welfare junkies I'm talking about! As a proud citizen of LA, you know how corrupt the city & state gov't are there. They have enslaved a large portion of the population to socialism and rendered them useless while pissing away the money taken from hard working people like you. Save your indignation for the overlords and sluggish chaff of the "big easy". I'm not the problem.

I love when people say that Trials and Tribulations is upon us. Its so easy to excuse away reality with religion but those of us not living with our heads stuck up our asses call it global warming. So when you drive your Yukon XXXXL (formerly known as a school bus) to church every week to pray for the trials, how about you pray for a president that wants to solve this problem.

MobergNixon... ... ( 5 months ago by mrtylercat)
MobergNixon...You're an idiot...have you ever been to any of these flooded places? As I previously posted most of these people live MILES away from the nearest levee. I am not sure about Lawrence County, but in Jasper the highest elevation is only 675 feet or so above sea level. This is something that happens frequently. As a matter of fact this is something that no one who lives there has ever seen. Speaking before thinking should also be outlawed.
to MasterMark123... ... ( 5 months ago by mrtylercat)
to MasterMark123...natural swelling??? Is that what you're calling it. Another great example of someone speaking of something they know nothing about! My family has lived in the area for over 100 years and there is no one who has EVER seen flooding to this extent. I wouldn't exactly call this "natural swelling"
Levees are NOT ... ( 5 months ago by MasterMark123)
Levees are NOT natural. More and more of them have been made over the years to block the river from going into it's ( yes natural) flood plains. It is then FORCED to follow the same path it has as a river with NO ROOM to ever swell its banks. THATS how you get major flooding in what id NOW settled areas
Once again there ... ( 5 months ago by mrtylercat)
Once again there you go flapping your jaw without knowing a thing! I can tell you that this doesn't compare to 93. Sure the rivers got out in places, but they were nothing to this extent. If you were also to look on a map most of the mid west is technically considered a flood plain. So tell me Einstein where should everyone live...Montana...sorry on top of a super volcano, California...earthquakes, Florida...hurricanes, Oklahoma/Texas...tornado alley???
