i plan on doing this, i got the aluminum from etch a sketch and im gunna get the ferric oxide from handwarmers (not sure if it really is iron oxide) or the ferric oxide on the beach. are those ok to use? also, can u light the magnesium ribbon with a lighter or do u need a torch?

Hi,
Not sure what you're talking about with regards to the handwarmers' iron oxide or even the ferric oxide on the beach??? all you need is rust! that's iron oxide! and no i don't think a lighter will get hot enough to ignite magnesium ribbon, you'll have to use a blowtorch.
Regards,
David Avery.

He propably means that you can collect iron oxide with a magnet from sand. I don't know about the handwarmers though.

Yeah maybe but it's far easier to get the iron oxide from an old rusty car or caravan/trailer chassis, you need to find a piece of iron that is really rusty so the rust flakes off, then crush this into a fine powder and dry it. Then mix it 50% with alu powder and you have a thermite mixture!

I bought some red iron oxide from a cheramics store. About 15€ 2,5 kg. It's hard to get aluminum powder though. I was thinking of maybe melting the aluminum and then mix it with the rust.

Aluminum powder ... ( 1 month ago by Fornhost)
Aluminum powder aint that hard to make. Just get some aluminum plumbing, shave it down with a grinder with a container in the position that the slag is gonna fly off of. The resulting powder in the container needs to be ground in a mortar and pestle,( ideally, yet the back of a spoon against another metal surface will suffice) and voilah! Aluminum powder. Rust is ez 2. Cut the two wires from a dc inverter then put em in a jar of water with an iron nail wrapped in the + side.
