Orion is only ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
Orion is only visible in the winter in the Northern hemisphere. During other parts of the year you may catch it in the early AM or late at night. Orion is by Gemini. Gemini is associated with the months of June-July, through horoscopes (we are ignoring the fact that due to precession that is slightly off), meaning the Sun is within that area of the sky in those months (the general Taurus-Orion-Gemini region), and thus we can't see Orion (the sun is too bright).
In the Winter, the ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
In the Winter, the Sun is now on the other side--within the general Sagittarius region (inside the winter horoscope signs, constellations we see in the sky in summer). Since the sun is now opposite, Orion is prominent in the sky.
If it helps, I'm about to graduate with a degree in astronomy, and I work at a planetarium and give talks on the stars and constellations regularly.

Yeah that sounds ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
Yeah that sounds about right. Once the sun is far enough past Orion (from our perspective), you can catch it before sunrise, so that makes sense. Basically it's a matter of how close the sun is (from our Earth view) to Orion. 5:30, before sunrise-ish, does make sense, especially if within the last month. I think I took the word "night" a little too literally when I read your post.
I understood ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
I understood betelgeuse to essentially translate to "armpit of the great one" since it's where his armpit would be...(granted betelgeuse isn't even the right spelling or pronounciation). The star Rigel (blue one at the bottom right--where his foot is) would be "foot." I imagine these are rough translations though....
If you went out ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
If you went out every night at the same time and recorded the moon's position it would change by 12 degrees a day. Also, realize that half the time, the moon is only visible in the day time (depends on the proximity to the sun, from our perspective). This is due to the fact the moon goes around the Earth--in a little less than a month actually. This is what is also responsible for the phases in fact.
It is flexible ... ( 1 month ago by Laurelin3285)
It is flexible depending on the interpretation and originating culture. Orion is typically towards Taurus, hunting him it seems, but not always. In fact, in many other nations as well as American Indian, the constellation we know as Orion is still a man, but depicted otherwise. In Australia, he is upside down, and rather than being a hunter, is lowsy and no one likes him. Constellations are always open to a little interpretation, it just depends on the version.
