That's true. For the story, the first time he came to Europe he raced at the Paul Ricard track in France and managed to impress even with totally inappropriate GoodYear tires he had brought back from Daytona.

Sheene was great. A very very tough guy and always a pleasure to talk to. Roberts at the time was much less approachable.

Roberts may have been a better rider, but he had the personality of a wet towel. Barry Sheene was solely responsible for making GP racing an international sport. His character and style were the equal to Keith Moon of "the Who", confident, flamboyant and yet approachable. He was a "rock star" on a bike. The greatest ambassador the sport has ever known and the last Brit to win a World Championship in 1977. Barry Sheene RIP.

I remember watching this at the time. I was 8 years old, not a bike racing fan, and I'm still not, but this made a huge impression on me. I remember Sheene's "wave" like it was yesterday. Edge of the seat stuff.
