if you are a prodigy you can. besides, how can you say even Mozart couldn't when he was composing since age 5! and when he was six he played in front of an Austrian empress. this is possible. I don't know how i let this argument get into facts about Mozart, but what August is doing is possible!

true... but the movie is based on a true story. The real august rush (I'm not sure if thats his name in real life) really is a music prodigy. Other music prodigy were ppl like Beethoven, just natural born gifted ppl able to play and learn and compose music at amazing capacities.

They kinda had to majorly exagerate in the movie cus they don't have time to show a progression...he had to pick things up and just do it. Even so a real prodigy would probably be able to do something like that in a few days. If you've ever just plunked around on a piano or guitar you should know that even us non prodigy's can find pleasing sounds and melodies by just playing around and then we remember and repeat and come up with our own stuff...or maybe it's just me.

It is possible, and yes, the movie obviously exaggerates his abilities, but it's an average length movie. it's very difficult to show progression through a movie like that.
And you're right. Most people, before they learn the instrument, play around on it, and find tunes and such they like. than they pick it up. You can't just decide, "Oh, I'm gonna be a musical genious" you have to discover your talent and interest.
