Eric Clapton was using a Gibson Explorer guitar.

he didn't use a strat until '70. he was already established as god for 5 long years on gibson guitars before he used blackie. the first instance i can think of him using fender was the tele w/ strat neck he sometimes used with blind faith ('69).

I was at the Hyde Park free concert by Blind Faith in 1969 and have just got the dvd. That did take me back. I don't think it matters what guitar he plays he makes good music with them all.

Now, I think Gibson actually made a custom Shop version of Eric explorer here. limited to 250 I believe. I saw one on ebay, and it was the same color as this with gold hard ware, and intead of coming to a point in the back where the strap button is, it's cut off. Odd, but beautiful at the same time.

Are you sure you're not thinking of his red ES-335? I know Gibson made replicas of that guitar. I didn't think Clapton's Explorer was famous enough for that.

No, not his es-335. I saw it on Ebay, the explorer that is. It was brown, like Claptons, and had gold hardware. The only diffrence was that the one on Ebay had a straight cut back in stead of the point. could have been a fake, I don't know, but it looked awesome.
