These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!
We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

yeah where im from, in western can. diesel is usually always cheaper then gas. the jetta would be my choice for sure after watching this, it is also the nicest by far.

ya and what the prius isnt ugly? no the new fit is ugly but the 07-08 one isnt and the VW and ford dont have that good of reliability and the prius is really costly

The Citroen AX is smaller than the Prius but not *that* much smaller.
The VW Lupo 3L (which *does* meet modern safety standards) took place in a publicity stunt where they drove a fleet of them in a trip that was the equivalent of driving around the world. The card *averaged* 98.83 mpg (US Gallons) or 118.69 mpg (imperial gallons). It's best mileage was 118.2 US/141.95 Imp MPG.
There are over a dozen cars (not scooters) for sale in Europe that get better mileage than a Prius.

This test really is not fair for the Jetta. If you listened, it is a 2005 model. The new '09 has a new drive train with an average mph greater than 50. Additionally, the prius has a cvt tranny while the jetta's is unknown. An automatic has a 5+mpg penalty compared to the manual. The new '09 has a newer automatic, which should correct this. I would like to see a test pitting the '09 jetta with a '09 prius.

I have an 2006 TDI they get even better so it would come out on top so I know why they used 2008 toyota and the 2005 VW because they don't want to say the Diesel is the best eco choice because it is. Simple technology that has been around and is eco friendly.

re: chippy7100, the prius is a lot, i mean a lot nicer then the fit... the designer of the fit should be fired, i don't know what to compare it too. And the vw doesn't have good reliability? last time i checked they have some of the best, and right up there with Toyota and Honda.

The Smart Fortwo is a loser in every way. A tiny car like that should get much better gas mileage. It's uncomfortable, cramped, and deadly in a crash. It's a car that looks "green" but isn't.

Hybrids r heavier, more polution is produced during manufacture due to modern materials aswell. even 30% of all cars carbon tyreprint is produced during manufacture for average car.
We could save environment by keeping older cars and maybe just changing engines.
It is capitalism and consumerism that is to blame for most polution not just the car.
we must change the throw away society.
